What fuses & cable to use for DIY electrics

    Hi All
I just bought the last part for my carputer, an 8" LCD touchscreen so I can begin building it now

What was suggested to me was that I run a fused main cable to the overhead shelf, (once I fit it) then 'tap off' this main cable with fused spurs for indavidual items on the shelf.

What I need to know is what size/amp/type? of cable and what size fuse I should use for the main cable and each individual item.

Items 1-6 will run from the AUX battery:

    1.Main cable to spur from
    2.Tyre pressure monitor 30-80 milliamps
    3.Carputer PSU-205w max (draw probably 140w-ish)
    4.Touch screen 8w
5.Batt monitor x2 not sure of watts I was going to use THESE
    6. may need a small amp for sound, so not sure yet of Watts, will be smallest I can use, I'm not a doof-doof fan.

Items 7-9 will run from the main cranking battery.
    7. UHF 5w output so 5+ watts draw?
    8. AM 3-4w output so 5+ watts draw?
    9. air horn (Not a clue so guess-timate is fine)

What would be great would be :

    item 1: cable X fuse X

    but anything will be helpful.

The main cable that you will run should be as big as you can so you don't get current/voltage drop (maybe 6mm should hold 35amps)

I would run the same size wiring to your touch screen and carputer

The tyre prussure gauge and volts gauge 3mm should be enough as long as its around 20amps (4mm is better)

Amp for sound 25 amp wire will be fine.

My on-board compressor will run 8mm-10mm cable that can handle 100amps and have a hundred amp inline fuse (compressor pulls 40amps)

If you get stuck ring the boys at battery world

    Hi HangOver, just some suggestions.

Items 1-6 will run from the AUX battery:
    1.Main cable to spur from

Depending on how much power the sound system is going to draw and if you are planning to expand the set-up, 6mm Auto minimum or run 8B&S and you will never have a problem with voltage drop.
Fit a 30 amp circuit breaker at the battery.

    2.Tyre pressure monitor 30-80 milliamps
    3mm Auto + 5 amp fuse

    3.Carputer PSU-205w max (draw probably 140w-ish)
    5mm Auto + 25 amp fuse

    4.Touch screen 8w
    3mm Auto + 5 amp fuse

5.Batt monitor x2 not sure of watts
    3mm Auto + 5 amp fuse

    6. may need a small amp for sound, so not sure yet of Watts, will be smallest I can use, I'm not a doof-doof fan.
    5mm Auto + 25 amp fuse

Items 7-9 will run from the main cranking battery.
    7. UHF 5w output so 5+ watts draw?

    3mm Auto + 5 amp fuse

    8. AM 3-4w output so 5+ watts draw?
    3mm Auto + 5 amp fuse

    9. air horn (Not a clue so guess-timate is fine)
    5mm Auto + 25 amp fuse

It also might pay you to run an earth back from all of these to a common point.

Thank you very much both of you.
    That was a great help.

Drivesafe, if you don't mind me asking you said "to run an earth back from all of these to a common point."

Do you mean run one shared earth back to the battery - side ?
    or
All to one central point as long as its a good new earth?

    Thanks
    Steve

Either. If you are not sure you can get a good earth near each application, run a common earth back the neg terminal.

    Cheers and have fun.
