Due to low battery voltage it dropped into limp mode to protect the engine. However it should have been driveable but with just less power. Try a brand new battery if the problem is still there it might be something a little more serious.
I had to jump start a TD5 D2 last night for a friend (he was away with work and the car needed to be shifted).
It took a while to get enough charge into his battery, I couldn't get it to turn over at anything under 13.3V.
Anyway, I started it, let it run for a few minutes, then drove forward, reversed a bit for a 3 point turn and then drove forward another 5 meters before the transmission went to neutral.
I shifted the gear lever but still no response. The red LEDs either side of the "D" on the shifter kept flashing, no matter what gear I had it in.
Is this am imobiliser issue? A low voltage issue? or what sort of gremlin? Coming from a Tdi Manual, I can only diagnose 'old school' problems.

Standard symptoms of the ZF auto gearbox (M&S lights flashing) when there's a flat battery.
so,, theres enough voltage to start the car,, but not allow it to operate?
and the car wont let itself charge the battery?
I'm ASSUMING the alternator will (pretty much instantly)be putting out over 14 volts trying to charge the battery,, wouldnt the electronics be running off those volts?

Also, going by other peoples reports on here in the past, the D2 can throw up a few differant fault/warning lights when the battery is low or faulty. M and S lights in particular. This is irrespective of what the altenator is putting out.
