Thread: The use of mud tyres

I'll offer an answer : the majority of kms on an offroad trip will actually be on the tarseal or gravel, getting to the "play" area, and then home again.

Those real aggresive tyres are great if you're expecting a lot of mud but they are noisy and lumpy on a normal road.

it's all a compromise I guess.

and the wear factor, load rating and speed rating of some of the really serious off road tyres are not up to legal standards.

I personally use my BFT MTs as my "play| tyres but also use them as a touring tyre. I like having a more agressive tread as I get into some challenging driving and AT's just wouldnt hack it, whereas more aggressive tyres like Simex ET's or JT2's would just be hell on a longer trip due to noise and handle terribly on the road. I find the muddies quite good on road and the noise isnt too bad...

It really does depend on what sort of driving you do. I tend to do touring, hard day trips and even tarmac trips so I run a standard set of tyres and muddies. A good compromise. But if your only into tearing around on the weekend then yes Simex's etc would be the most effective tyre for mud etc.

I would have thought you would go for the most aggressive tyre design for mud? Or is there more to it that my inexperienced mind isnt seeing?

Agree with the responses already given above.

In the UK the more extreme tyres are banned on lots of play day type events and local club run trials (RTV = Road Taxed Vehiicle trials) as they are considered too aggressive and damaging to the terrain.

Used on challenge events where terrain is more demanding, few vehicles involved, larger areas to drive in and terrain not used so often so terrain has time to recover.

PS I run BFG M/T as a daily drive tyre and apart from slightly increased braking distance in the wet find them a good all round tyre

try running down the freeway with a set of Simex!!!

we had a comp once - who can make the most noise JT2 or ETs!!!

The reason i ask is like some here, I want two sets of rims, one for driving around town, and one purely for play.

Perhaps the more standard mud tyre is for me. If using Simex on the road to and from the dirt is *that* painfull, it may take the enjoyment out of things.

How have you found your JT2's?
