    Series 3 T-Case Rebuild

Well the t-case in yellow pezza is finaly giving in. It has always had a lot of backlash in the gears, when i checked the oil level (still up to the fill hole) last night it seemed to be running hot . The very large amount of backlash seems to be from the output shaft gear, looks like i will have to rebuild. I plan to rebuild it myself as they are pretty simple, Any advice or tips about rebuilding ?

As you say they are fairly simple - if the problem is just backlash, it may not need a complete rebuild, and dropping the bottom plate and having a look inside may be worthwhile. I think the box can be overhauled in place if preferred.

I have heard that there are doubts about the quality of some cheap replacement parts, but with any sort of luck you may only need bearings and seals.

Series model T/C's are the easiest thing you'll ever rebuild on a LR.I've done a few and there a good job. They all have backlash don't worry to much just use pom or yank parts, don't use no name stuff. Pat

just judging by the amount of movement of the output gear i reckon i will be replacing the output shaft and gear, the splines are probabably chewed to bits. i am hoping the gears in my spare parts landy are ok i might be able to use them. Hopfully i can fix it without taking it out.

Well i have managed to strip down the transfer case yesterday afternoon and most of the guts of it need replacing the output shaft and the high and low range gears splines are badly worn. the input and intermediate gears are both fine, but the intermediate shaft is also in need of replacement. i have not had a look at the price of the new gears or output shaft yet anyone in brissy got a output shaft lying around in need of a new home

looks like it is my lucky day today. Started off bad when i found out it was going to cost about $800 in parts for the T-Case , fortunately I went to the effort of ripping the guts out of the T-Case in the old SWB S3 i have rusting away in the paddock. What luck i have, all the gears, splines and shafts in it are almost in new condition so into yellow pezza they will go in the next few days I am pretty happy now as all i will need is a few new bearings and seals.

Here are the photos of the worn out bits from yellow pezza's t-case. Note: you do not want anything in you're transfer case to look like this

    The output shaft.

    Low range gear.

    High range gear.

    intermediate gear shaft.

    intermediate gear thrust bearings

I will post some picks during the re-assembly of the T-Case in the next few days.
