    Steering Damper

I dont think the steering damper in my car has been changed since the cars eventful birth in 1993.

I want to change it, but Ive seen on eBay a number of dampers listed ranging in price from $70-$250.

    Some have springs, some dont.

I'm looking for a damper with bestvalue for money, and able to withstand the occaisional offroad trip.

    Where to begin??!

    Please edumacate me

if you go over rough terrain and can feel every bump sharply through your steering wheel you damper may be buggered. Remove the damper and push in the two ends, if it does not expand again within a few seconds its nackered.

The ones with springs are "return to centre" it helps your wheels return to a straight path more easily.

As for brand , theres a can of worms, it's like asking what beer is best.
I suppose it's like the phrase:

tough, cheap, well built : pick any two.

Most people would say get the best you can afford?
If you can afford it go for bilstein's or get one 1/4 the price and replace it more often

That test only works for gas pressurised dampers. Many are emulsion type and don't self extend even when new.

After many years of driving LRs in everything form fast freeway to very rough bush roads and fire trails the best steering damper by far that I have used ist the Bilstein. Long lasting and effective

I've got a Bilstein that still works great even though it looks like this.

but that's only the stone cover !

FWIW I have a Billie too. Survived a few bad Roo strikes with minimal dings (even one on the working tube) too.

Need to get one for the Pootrol in the not so distant future and possibly leaning towards a Billie for it, too.

Is that a hole in it? I think you may find that the Bilstein is a monotube and thats actually the shock body rather than a stone cover.
