Question 85 County 110 V8 electrics have died?

    G'day folks,

I turned the key on the old landie (hasn't been started for about 4 weeks), the pump started to build-up pressure with the usual clicking sound, I turned the key all the way to crank when the pump was at pressure just like normal, and there was a big click sound and suddenly no power anywhere, except to the stereo which has a red LED on the front. Hmmm - battery seems in excellent charge and the connections are good and clean / tight, so I'm assuming its a fuse somewhere given there's no dash lights at all when I turn the key to any position.

The fuse-box panel under the dash seems all about fans, interior lights and so on as far as I can tell so I'm not sure where to start.

Interestingly, flashing the big-boy spotties gives a click but no lights, and putting the head lights on only gives me side-lights, nothing more. Anyone got any guesses?

Confused, dazed and not a little disappointed

Rather than a fuse, I would be looking for a faulty earth connection. This may be between the battery and its lead, or between the other end of the lead and the chassis, or either end of the lead from engine to chassis (on the Isuzu this is across the LH front engine mount, not sure where it is in the V8.

Other possibility would be a bad connection where the power is taken for most of the electrics on the main battery connection to the starter solenoid.

Even though the battery terminals appear clean and tight, it is worth checking them.

The stereo light is probably still on because it takes so little current that it functions even through the resistance of the poor connection.

If you have a voltmeter or test light, turn the headlights on and look for voltage across the various connections.

    Hope this helps.

John - worked like a charm! Superb diagnosis at a distance!

For the record it was the battery terminals - before I started the thread I'd taken them off and thought they looked clean enough, but when you said about them I took them off again, roughed them up with a wire brush and sand-paper, popped them back on and it was all absolutely fine. Amazingly simple. Must have been some film on them that wasn't obvious so scratching the battery and the clamps back to definite bare metal fixed it.

    Many thanks!

Believe me, bad earths are probably the most common electrical fault. It should be the first thing to check. Don't ask me how I know!
