Hi, I've got a V8i 96 discovery that is running very rich, to the point that it stalls while idling. It used to be an intermittent problem that only appeared while the engine was under load. It would run rough for 2 minutes and then sort its self out.
The problem has got progressively worse over the last week, to the point where it now seems to be running rich most of the time.
I gather it has faulty sensor or ECM. I replaced the air flow sensor 2 weeks ago and it seemed to run fine for a couple of days, then the problem came back worst than before.
I am intersted in any sugestions and if anyone can recommend a Fuel Injection Specialist that has worked on discoverys in the Melbourne area.

Sounds unfortunately like sticking valves. Does the engine slow down and smoke under load, then if left to idle pick up all 8 cylinders eventually ,idling OK?Originally Posted by Moyes

The engine would slowly start missing at 100kmh underload. You could smell the fuel and sound as it was running on 3 pistons. At this time the car would slowly crawling up the hill. Once i got to the top and eased up a bit the would start running smooth again.

I'm afraid that is a dead giveaway for sticking valves. I have a test hill I use to verify this problem when diagnosing/ test driving.

mine runs really rich (96 V8i), I cleaned the crap off the plugs the other week and after a couple of days going up and down the freeway to work the plugs are full of black soot again, its all over the plug not just near the electrode or anything. I mean all over it, as in any part that is poking into the cylinder is black.
Fuel consumption is about 16 - 18 L / 100km, black smoke comes out of the exhaust at about 3,500 rpm but other than that its fine. Engine doesn't misfire, it only lacks on power going up hills but I've put bigger wheels on so maybe thats upset it.
I checked the MAF and it *seems* to be working correctly, the voltages go up and down when I rev the engine, it was returning 3.3v when I first checked it but then I altered it to 1.something like someone else recommended and it runs a bit better now but it didn't change how much crap is on the plugs.
The funny thing is that it doesn't seem to burn oil, at least in any great quantities, I do have a couple of leaks but I normally top up every 5000 km or so after losing 500ml (thats a guess)
I thought maybe it was the injectors, but when you say sticking valves do you mean inlet / outlet or the valves in the injectors ?
Other than that I dunno what the problem is, if it wasn't for the plugs then I would say the engine runs fine.
