    grommits & rubber gaskets

Just got off the phone to FWD's in Melbourne and the bits i want to get are not made anymore . What i was after was the gaskets that go between the firewall and the brake and clutch brackets on a series IIa. What sort of material do you guys use when replacing these items ? My other problem is i need the rubber grommit that seals off around the steering column and can't get one . Any ideas what i can do or use to make one up myself ?

For the brake & clutch pedal boxes I used Neoprene impregnated cork sheet & made my own. Not hard, You just need some punches & good sharp scissors or snips.

Not sure what form the steering grommet takes but if you go to a decent rubber store you may get something suitable to either use or to make into. From memory though it is a flat gasket unless I'm thinking of something else.

Update: Just made an observation. If the steering column gasket is a flat one, then one made from a mouse pad appears as though it would fit the bill.

For the brake and clutch pedal boxes I got some neoprene rubber sheet from Clark Rubber and made my own. There was nothing at all on there previously. I did the same for the steering but used thicker rubber. A mouse pad would work well for the steering column.
Just be patient and get some hollow punches.

I used gasket material for the pedal boxes - I am slightly surprised that they are not made, as they would be the same as on the current Defender. But easy enough to make anyway. The neoprene rubber sheet sounds like it would be even better than the gasket material, as the bulkhead surfface is rarely very flat, and this is one of the places water gets in.

The steering column seal I poked round Clark Rubber and found an offcut of closed cell foam, and cut one out of that. But a mouse pad would be suitable, and a good source of closed cell foam for a variety of uses is those hiking mattresses. Available very cheaply in a variety of thicknesses.
