So the practice of using EGT Gauge to ascertain when to shut the engine off is more widespeard...
Thanks Dougal and Justinc...since the installation of EGT upstream I also let the engine idle down to Temps below 200C and then shut it off...
as apposed to letting an Electronic Timer decide when to shut it off for me...and prior to fitting EGT I used to let the Engine Idle for about 2-3 Minutes anyway before switching the engine off...
Its also illegal to leave a vehicle idling without the driver in the vehicle.
Turbo Timers are illegal....
And if you have to sit in the vehicle whilst the timer idles it down, just sit there anyhow for no $$$$
I have also recently been told this. Another reason for them being illegal (so I was told) is because it makes it more difficult for people to shut down your engine (and fuel supply) in the event of an accident if the driver is incapacitated. In vehicles where the fuel pump is at the tank, this pump will keep pumping fuel until the turbo timer times out. If there is a broken fuel line and potential for fire in the event of an accident, this is not a good situation.
I tried to convince my son of this just before he recently fitted a turbo timer to his Mazda RX7 - but he obviously prefers to listen to all his mates in the "fast car" industry.

If you read the Australian Design Regulations, or what ever it is called these days, I think you will find that turbo timers are illegal, as they interfere with the ability to turn the engine off. The exhaust gas temperature guage is probably much better, as it has benefits when driving. You can see if you are working the turbo too hard on a hot day and should be fitting an intercooler.

I don't like the idea of bypassing the ignition switch, a security nightmare as you have the wires in front of the dash on the unit for the world to see. With standard or mildly modified motors the need to spin down doesn't take long.

My D2 td5 had a T/timer fitted when I bought it.
Today after a 2 1/2 hour drive to my Mums place, I got out with the motor running on the timer. Did the meet greet, motor stops, lock car, go inside.
Five or so hours later, Battery flat because I left the lights on.
Had I not used the timer, I would have heard the warning chimes.
Jumper leads in the rear. can't get them, because I also have a cargo barrier and can't unlock the rear door with out power for the central locking.
Great ideas having only one door key lock.What to do if God only knows it should fail.
theres a good one of that from sydney from way back, a car security alarm mob offered a challange, if anyone could steal the car without damaging it they could have it legally someone turned up with a low loader with a forklift on the back, forked it up onto the trailer put the fork lift back on the back and drove off with it... one free car.
yeah one in each door... with key locks in the rear and the 2 fronts.
Which rover doesnt have key access to the rear door?
with the battery flat if you cant get to it all you need is some decent speaker wire and a donor battery, simply get under the vehilce and hook 12v up to the hot post of the startermotor and pick a convenient earth and you'll have enough go available to get the car to unlock on the central locking.
ARB townsville didnt like what I did after they fitted the turbo timers I asked for as part of the deal for the car, I shorted the inertia cut out switches wires and then demanded to know why the engine didnt shut down. They said because of the way they wired up the turbo timer at which point they did the Ohhhh hang on thats a safety feature thing and rewired it for me.
No its not but it bloody well should be.
I have a turbo timer because I couldnt get a EGT gauge fitted the dealers had a pink fit when i told them how they get fitted and did the "no way are we drilling the exhaust" thing. The reason I got it fitted is I was certain that back then SWMBO wasnt mechanical enough to idle it down (all our other rovers were non turbo) and occasionally someone else might be driving it so I couldnt guarentee theyd do the right thing.
