quote "On the TD5 Defender thing - has anyone worked out how to move (easily-ish) the ECU from under the seat to somewhere a little higher to stop it getting drowned in "oh that puddle / river / boghole doesn't look too deep !" mode."
Yes, The cables are long enough to reroute them to mount everything on teh bulkhead behind the seats / cubbybox. Much better solution than setting up pumps and so on in my opinion

Pete.
Does reloacting in that manner have any effect on the oil in the loom thing, or is that particular problem at the other end of the loom ?
I have never had the issue of oil in the loom but would assume moving the ecu would make no difference. presumably the oil works its way along to the ecu plugs by method of capillary action?

Someone I know on this forum has a td5 fender with the ecu re-located to the dash top. :)
Why not just go all the way to a roof console ?
few reasons for me.
One was that you didnt need to buy the extension loom which is quite expensive and adds connections.
Next was that it only moves the ecu, not all the fuses and relays from teh seatbox
Finally if you end up in a stream on your roof it will be under water! Joking apart, did an event in England last year where an upside down 90 had a 6" deep stream running through the roof!

personally Id have thought that water hitting relays and fuses would cause more problems than it hitting the ecu.
I have some photos somewhere of my ecu absoloutley full of muddy water! didnt like it a great deal! happened on new years day a couple of years ago when I got stuck on a very wet track in Wales. About a metre deep water, engine stopped during recovery.
Took the ecu apart on the side of the track, washed it out with bottled water, blew it dry with the arb compressor (hard when it was raining!)
put it back together and it started! slightly tempremental but got us back to the hotel, put in on the central heating radiator overnight, refitted it, and it still works (having said that it has been relegated to my spare ecu now)
