I do see your point - however I think the 'reliability problems' with TD5's have been blown out of proportion. Not that there haven;t been some, of course.
I;d be happy with either I must say - as long as it came in 130 dual cab form !!!!

It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

We had a 200tdi with us on our trip. It may have had a more reliable engine than our td5 but the gearbox broke. We were unable to get it fixed there and the best option was to leave it in Port Headland.![]()
I'd still rather have a new td5 than a 200tdi with half a million k's on it. I think my overall risk is lower for remote touring.

So how many of you fly on modern aircraft?
The modern planes are all fly by wire, full of electronics, suffer much more stress loading than a 4x4 would,
but you generally don't see many of them fall out of the sky...
back on topic,
My TD5 Defender would have been one of the original first batch launched in Australia in 1999.
I bought it new in 1999, drove it hard every / anywhere, and have never had any Electronic issues that stopped me anywhere.
The only electrical issues I've had,
Failed headlight switch, (emergency repaired in vehicle, since replaced)
Failed ABS pump relay, (ABS/TC stopped working, but it would still stop)-trip to LR workshop to diagnose/replace
Worn out Starter relay contacts, (Intermittent starting, cost about $20 to replace contact set)
Battery failed after 8 years, (just struggled to start, and happened at the same time as above issue)
Stuck ABS Shuttle valve, (ABS/TC stopped working, but it would still stop) - trip to LR workshop to diagnose, probably should have give it more of a flogging, as all they did was clear the fault and manually make the shuttle operate which freed it up!
Some blown globes...
None of these ever stopped me getting to my destination.

The point is a TD5 with half a million k's against the Tdi300 with the same k's. Give me the one that I can fix in a remote place. Gear box can fail in any vehicle the problem is the electrics in any machine. 20 years servicing CNC machine tools was very rewarding for me
The old machines never missed a bitso no income for me.
I think you're missing my point too. By the time our TD5 has half a million on it your 200tdi will have a million. In which case I won't be keen to go anywhere out of the way in either of them![]()
By that time I'll have a brand new defender in it with a defender powered by a hydrogen fuelcell... LOL Actually since landrover is now owned by the indians they will probably go back to making them with 200tdi's as they Ford will stop selling them transit motors... And then everyone will be happy.

what? you wouldnt take a diesel engine if it had done a million miles......
oh dear, what am I going to do with the 2.25 diesels that are still going strong that came in series rovers..... what am I going to replace them with......
half a million K's on a diesels just about got it run in and a the mill mark its about time for the first rebuild....

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I agree with your comments, I opened a 4 cyl Perkins of a F100 with one millon k's of hard work in the rice fields.
I guess that people do not have an idea of how much can last an enine which it is not screw up with electronics to delivery the required power.
When they will have more than 40 years in the trade they will know![]()
