V8 - Serious Oil Leak!
I've just bought an '85 County with a 3.5 litre V8. The only real fault I'm aware of is a serious engine oil leak. I can't see exactly where it's coming from, but on a short drive it literally pours out of the top of the engine. It is coming from somewhere around the back of the valley cover, but I can't see an obvious source for the leak.
I've never had a V8 before and was wondering whether this is a common problem. Anybody know?
I will fix it if it is inexpensive, but I basically bought the car as a parts donor for my Isuzu 110. The V8's general condition is very good so I will probably pull the diesel and gearbox out of my current 110 (also an '85 model) and put it in the V8. Even so, I wouldn't mind running the V8 for a little while.

Yes.
probably the rear end seal of the Valley gasket has split.
Easy to do on reassmbly of the manifold to heads.
You will need a new valley gasket and 2 end seals and about 2 hours for a carby car.

Also check the rocker cover gaskets (an easy job). Too often I've bought vehicles where owners have bodged these with household silicon which nevers seems to last the distance.

Having owned a 83 RRC with the same problem, a new tin valley cover / inlet gasket is definitely called for. However, the cause is a blocked flame trap, which usually is a cylindrical object that screws into the rocker cover at the front of the engine. The metal mesh inside clogs up with oil from blow by, and the blow by pressurizes the crankcase, and blows the oil out the back. Have a suitable tap standing by just in case you cross thread the bolt holes in the aluminum heads. A replacement flame trap may be hard to find - you can temporarily run without the flame trap or pull some of the mesh out of it. Use some decent silicone and correct torque order and settings, because there is a hot water passage across the inlet manifold. Otherwise it's not hard to fix.

Cheers guys
I'll probably have a go at sorting it in the New Year.
