the shear pin is the overload protection device think of it as a fuse.

the winch is capable of pulling more that the cable/anchor/shackles/Drum/chassis is capable of withstanding when you try to put that much effort into it it snaps the shear pin and the winch effort stops and the wormgear holds all the load.

Replacing the pin after its snapped can be an entertaining experience with mud, hammers, drift pins and swearwords a plenty.

When I hunted down Thomas / PowAuto I got an electronic copy of the manual for my Thomas T8 PTO Winch (attached).

I ended up contacting David Brown Engineering & Hydraulics who were very helpful and (I believe) now own what was Thomas.

Smile Looks like I got a deal!

This time it looks like I got a deal!

When I bought this 1975 2dr Rangie for spare parts( For manly the rear tail gate top glass door) I never even looked under the bonnet.

When I went to pick it up, the guy told me that he had a winch for it as well
and did I want it. He said it was no good to him any more.

I then checked under the bonnet to find a new radiator and a set of pacemaker headers with the paint still visible in patches, what a bonus. It looks like they have been made to allow space for the PTO shaft down the left hand side of the block.

I've seen the winch drum and drive shafts. The drive gear is fitted to the gearbox already. Will pick the rest up this weekend coming. How heavy would the drum be? Will look at running something like Amsteel Blue winch line on it.

I only paid $500 NZ dollars for the lot, what a deal!!!!!!!
Some times you get lucky and other times you just break stuff!
