Thread: Warning of an electrical gearbox warning on a fault on Td5

It's usually due to a dicky earth. You'll probably find if you turn the car off, arm the alarm, disarm and restart it will clear or eventually clear. I understand there was a software update to prevent this, though I don't know much about it. When the M & S lights are flashing it goes into limp mode and locks itself into 3rd gear when in drive also.

I had this problem with my 2002 disco it happened sometimes when I started the car. It was caused by me accidently pressing a button on the key during statup. The other time it happened I took it to Austral and they said the battery was low and replaced it under warranty.

Yeah this happened to my brother in laws disco. Turned out the battery was going dead. Replaced it and now problem.

Grab a mate whose got a good mulitmeter and have him check the battery voltages under load, charge and running conditions and go for a drive, Chances are that if its the first and only time its occoured that you have one of those faults that are a combination of a few little things near causing trouble.

look for all your electrical connectors and make sure they are clean and ok.
check all your earths and based on the age of the battery it might be time to think about replacing it if its not top notch.

earths are fairly heavy duty wires running from a casing/casting to a mount or a point on the body work or chassis. to check them give them a wiggle if the connector moves under the bolt its loose dont just tighten it, remove the bolt scrub the area around the bolt hole down with a scouring pad then do the connector and the bolt as well. While you have it apart flex the cable a little and if you hear it make faint snapping noises it should be replaced. Once you bolt it all back together give it a little spray with wd40 or the like and 95% of the time after that that one will behave for you.

I had a similar problem with my Disco Td5 after being on Fraser Island. I checked earths etc to no avail. On mine it turned out to be the external electrical plug on the ZF Auto is not that waterproof (I had found many references to it on British Disco forums). And water had penetrated the unit after using the high pressure underbody wash at Rainbow Beach. After using plenty of WD40 it came good after a few days and has not repeated the problem since.

mine been doing this since new been to stealers had the wiring loom replaced still does it from time to time had a new battery made no difference
would prefer they convert it to manual that will fix the stupid auto

Had this problem since buying mine last August.
As mentioned above, replaced the battery which was working but had a collapsed cell, and saw an improvement.
Checked all connections for the A/T and finally replaced the gear position switch - result: problem completely solved.
