Clutch master cylinder

I know this has been covered before, I did a search but it didn't answer my actual question.

I have a small amount of clutch fluid leaking down the pedal so it looks like the master cylinder is on the way out (it was replaced under warranty at 30,000km and is now up to 180,000km so it hasn't done too bad).

My question is will it fail suddenly or is it a gradual process? I'm off up north on Saturday so would rather not have any surprises.

(Also is it true that a trailer brake cylinder will fit? That might be a good option as an emergency spare).

On my recent experiences I would have to say YES, it can fail from one gear change to the next, working one minute not the next

.

If you wanted a real cheap (and probably nasty) spare, similar trailer master cylinders are available for about $40 from places like SuperCheap etc. Probably???? would only have the change the pushrod.

maybe I'll just try to get hold of a proper one before I go. Won't have time to change it but at least if it does go I'll be prepared.

I got a pleasant suprise after opening a trailer M/C box and finding it was a Girling one inside! $43.00 too!!!
Its worth checking whats IN the box too, Girling make the LR ones....

Mine is leaking again too. That's two this year.

I am heading north tomorrow and carrying everything I need to bleed and re-fill the flamin thing, but I have never had it fail altogether.
Still it might be worthwhile to duck over to supercrap and get one before I go!

The one that I bought for my old Landy was exactly the same as the ones on the rack for trailers also. Changing the pushrod to suit is really easy also, just a circlip. I think the MC's will come with different bores though, just something to be aware of, and I'm not sure which bore dia is required for a replacement.

very helpful as usual! My problem is that due to working the rest of the week it'll be very hard to get to one of the ever diminishing LR parts places in Perth before we head off, but I can get to a Supercrap easily so it looks like a 3/4" bore trailer cylinder might hit the spares box for the trip.

Carry that and a container of brake fluid and few spanners and you are set.

But in most cases you can avoid sudden failure by checking the fluid level daily and keeping it topped up as necessary.
