    Disco 200 tdi radiator question

Has anyone upgraded their water radiator as I would like some ideas to increase my cooling capacity, I run a standard recored one at the moment with all new hoses and water pump. All is fine except under high load on a hot day when it is needed most. I run betewwn 90 to 108 degrres on these days.Any ideas wouls be appreciated. Thanks

It would help to know more, Where are you located? 90 to 108 is an acceptable engine temp in high ambient temperatures towing or working hard.
The factory thermostat in a 200Tdi is 88 degrees from memory.
Bigger 4 or 5 row cores are available, and a new viscous fan hub would help too if towing big loads at low speeds, around 40 to 60 kmh. A ford falcon fan hub will fit these, and will not freewheel as easily as the LR one, causing more air to be drawn through at low speeds. This may help.

Mine has a new radiator and it runs beautifully on days up to 30 or so degrees, even pushing it really hard. Today it topped 41.5 outside and the little red light started flashing on the temp guage at anything over 100 KMph.

    Thanks JC
I do not tend to tow at low speeds as we are usually covering a large distance. My concern is that I run at around 105 for long peroids in the heat of the day. I am located in SA. I am not sure how many rows are in my radiator but it is 52mm thick. Probably 3 or 4 rows. Do you know where I can get the 5 core radiators from?

I would PM tombraider, Mike Hayes. He is in Whyalla and may be of assistance in locating a Rad. place that would do a 5 row or similar core if you want one.

    justinc,
Does the ford falcon viscous fan unit also fit the defender, if so what model flacon does it come from ???.

    Hi Lucas,

I believe XF and EA fit. I have seen them fitted, and thats when I noticed the stiffness of the coupling. The Falcon fans are huge in diameter, hence the viscous unit internal 'load' is higher.

If it only occours when its working hard (heavy load up hill at speed) and so long as its a "real" 105 degress thats an acceptable temperature as far as the engine is concerned if your coolant (or cooling system) is not up to speed however then its likely to cause problems.

If your just reading 105 on an aftermarket gauge have its accuracy checked before going the expensive route of a new radiator.

IF the overheating warning light is coming on on the dash tho then your up near 110 and thats getting close to the max rated temp and pressure for the cooling system and you might be about to get into trouble.

If it doesnt drop quickly out of the danger zone when you back off then you also might have other problems to consider.
