Drop in power when D2 air con on

    BD Chipped '99 Manual TD5 D2

Does anyone else have an noticable power drop and rougher running engine with air con turned on? I have a straight through exhaust and the sound is very smooth when no air con but rougher and louder with aircon on, plus I really feel the drop in power with the air con on.

I would expect some drop in power etc but not as noticable as it is.

    Aye, Mick

Don't really notice much drop with mine. It's all stock manual 1999 TD5 - no chips etc.

I usually run with the AC on most of the time. I think there was a thread about this before Christmas.

In winter I sometimes put it to ECON mode just to compare the difference.

Thanks guys for the comments. Yeah it's a strange one, as I have had the car for years now and I have only recently started to notice the difference - plus we are in summer which means it's generally on more. But the drop in power is there as is the rougher engine noise. Also, in low range 1st gear, it will idle up a lot of stuff but with the air con on idling up stuff you would normally becomes an issue and sometimes results in a stall, plus hard to keep going before stall. It's like the air con is sucking the cars power and not allowing it to rev freely

Heading in for a service soon so will get them to check it out and report back if anytihing comes of it.

    Thanks again, Mick

at idle the older engines would drop in rpm that was why some of them had a soleniod that would raise the engine rev's up slightly, not sure if the engine ECU gets a signal to say that the air con clutch is on but when I have had the rova comlite pluged in it does tell me that the clutch is on or off

Idling with A/C off uses preset parameters. With A/C working the ecu is using sensors to keep the idle within the specified rev range. The MAF may be dirty and giving a false reading.

Mine to has the BD upgrade no difference here either air on or off, love it.

just drove down the Hume at night to Melbourne though gee the cold night air made it run a treat.

    Very enjoyable

    Cheers
