Rattle sound on start - bellhousing area

A loud rattle just started coming from the bellhousing /t/case area when I kickover/start the car. Only half a second but quite loud. Once running all is OK.

Doesn't happen when I start car with clutch pedal depressed.

I'm thinking something in the pressure plate or thrust bearing - hopefully not t-case.

Any ideas ? I'll take it down for my mech. to listen tomorrow but would like an opinion from you guys first.

I have something similar in my D2. I recently had the flywheel and clutch pack replaced and since then have had a buzzing rattle from the area when I first start up the disco. After everything warms up though it disapears.

I am taking the disco back to the mechanic for a check.

It sounds like the tranfer plate - you may be in early stages of failure.

Have a word with Ron, he recently replaced his.

May be the throwout sleve on the gearbox input shaft rattleing as i had a similar drama and it would only go away with the clutch in ...

Turned out being the the extension sleeve on the input shaft had worked loose and was moving in and out with the thrust race and also floging round on the input shaft and silly me didnt fix it straight away and i broke the fulcrim pin out of the bellhousing which ment i had to replace the bell housing and the extension sleeve ...

Thanks heaps all that gives me some clues ...... looks like a clutch or gearbox job then - oh well the rear main seal needed doing anyway. There's been a judder in the clutch on takeoff for a while too so it's all pointing there.
( and if you're wondering wht I'm posting at 2 am its too hot to sleep here in Melb tonite. )

if the rear main seal needs doing Im going to go with the fact that youve got a contaminated clutch and something that shouldnt be loose has come loose.

If its not that then you probabley dont want to know about it being the gearbox input bearing.

Start of a noisy thurst washer
common with land rovers when they are about to go. My 90 did it about 6 months ago and has now stopped but clutch is ok and normal land rover thing, If it ain't broke don't fix it
