    zf auto just stoped

hey guys hope you all had a great and happy xmas/newyears.
Mine was full of dramas final straw being my disco.

Now what happend was driving back from tara on highway doing about
95kmh next thing i know is revs are up around 3200 rpm and i have no drive. So i pulled over checked the fluid level in the auto seemed to be full
slid underneath checked for broken drive shafts they we ok. Next i changed to low range made no difference locked teh centre made no difference.there were no loud bangs no crunches no grinds just nothing
300km trip back on a tow truck and a shuffle of people and dogs into other cars big pain in teh ass.

So now my question is where and what do i start looking at first
As i have next to no idea's about auto's. So any pointers as what to check first and what possible causes could have made this happen
i am expecting the worst ie rebuild/secondhand box but i am hoping it's
not that serious. any and all help is greatly apreciated as always guys

    thanks

    hmmm

On my 2000 td5 disco i tore out the flex plate, which is like the flywheel on a manual, but lighter as the weight of the torque converter makes up for it. Could be that? Also check that it is actually in gear. Have a look to make sure any dash indicators show the same gear as the selector, and check the cable that activates the selector on the side of the gearbox is workin. Also check the transfer case lever feels normal, that it has not jumped into neutral somehow, or a connection is stuffed.
If you put it in park, can the vehicle roll? This would indicate a fault "downstream" of the park lock, some kind of breakage or disconection. If it's all locked up properly but releases in "n" then I guess its "upstream" of this mechanism, ie not in the transfer case. If u suspect the transfer case has a fault, it may well be the input to it from the zf has stuffed splines I believe, someone posted some pics of this on a defender recently i seem to recall.

with it making no effort and not making any noises Id be leaning towards a selection failure.

having not pulled the auto off of the back of the td5 (yet) If its an electronically controled one it could be as simple as a blown fuse for the electronics.

    but

why did the fuse blow. Assuming the electronics (if fitted) are ok

If your lucky a flush out will fix it but I dont hold high hopes for that.

If the primary clutch pack or gearset has let go its time for a rebuild.

Being a '96 Tdi, it won't be electronically controlled.

It could be the flex plate (I've broken 2 on my V8). It's easy to check. Pull off the small circular cover from the bottom of the bellhousing and see if the torque converter can be rotated easily. It shouldn't move at all if the flex plate is solid. Or start the engine and see if the torque converter is spinning.

Having said that, neither of my flex plate failures resulted in loss of drive.

BTW, did you try reverse gear?

As blknight.aus said, it could be as simple as selection failure.

Try taking the middle of the top off your in-cab selector (needs a screwdriver). In there is a bar with a little split-pin. If that split-pin falls out for any reason = no drive.

Been there, done that - was embarrassed about how easy a fix it was Hopefully yours is the same.

I should stop posting before my coffee....

I re-read the details from davros's post about the td5....

with that out of the equation...

if it stopped while driving its an internal problem. I would have thought that it would have stayed in the gear it was in if the connecting pins had come out of the selector.... Hope Im wrong tho.

Our 96 TDi auto did a similar thing after we were rear ended in an accident. Drove for another 800mm then no drive in any gear and no mechanical noises to point out a failure. After three weeks and a stripdown of the gearbox the sent the torque convetor away to be split. It was stuffed

The auto shop said that as the convetors wear out the inpellors become thin. The impact must have been enough to break them. It was another shop that cut the convetor and they said they had seen it befor in ZF gearboxes.

    Hope this helps.

When the Drive plates break then the 300TDI's vibrate to the crap house and make lots of nasty noises so I would say that that is unlikely.

Converter normally causes vibrations as well but is probably more likely.

I would be inclined to think that it may have gone to kick down or change up and one of the spool valves has got stuck and given it a drop in pressure thus no drive.

    Or

It could have broken a main pump or pump drive/ drive shaft.

These could both be diagnosed with a main line pressure test.

    .
i remember reading somewhere that if kickdown cable snaps it also causes a loss in preasure can anybody confirm this if so i will check that also failing the simple tests i can do at home i guess it will be box out and sent away to be checked and fixed
