    97 disco tdi300 tyres

I know this gets done to death but after some real life experiences with 33's with the tdi300, seems to drive ok. I am not after a power house or a vehicle to do seriuos stuff in but after a work vehicle come tourer (planned gibb river road ect later this year). I have just purchased this disco (pick up in about a fornight) so do I stick with the 33's (they are new, less than 1000km) or do I go 32's or even 31's to get better gearing and economy.
    thanks in advance
    cheers

235 85 16 BFG AT KO Actually measures in at 32.5" (or close to it) when fitted and I find that they are not too bad but they do increase fuel consumption and make it feel slow on the road most noticable pulling away at the lights with the air con on but still keeps up with traffic fine.

It is great off road and once in Low range it goes pretty much anywhere I expect it to and some places I dont expect.

    Tire Diameter

    Thats interesting.

My Cooper st/c 235 85 R16 @ 36 PSI (rear) with < 2000k on them (recently rotated 2 fronts off and put on @ rear 2 unused spares) measure 30.75" bottom to top of tread.

I wonder what makes the BFG's 3/4 of a inch bigger? I guess it depends where they r being measured.

    Whose? Mine?

Mine is the regulation 10% under. Most defenders are even with std rims n tyres on.

I'm about to pull it out n send it to a instrument fitter to re calibrate for me

It might take a while so I need another one to put in

Measured across (horizontally) the tyre when fitted brand new.

Just another reason to not buy Coopers but Im biast, I hate them

BUT some people like them so I will now shut up....

It has made my speedo reading slower by 2% so it is pretty easy to work out.

When you get your Disco, and drive it around NW Tas with the 33's on it, try and find a friend who can loan you a set of standard'ish wheels - roughly 29 inch. (205/80r16). Do a drive around the hills and note the difference when you have to change gear. It comes down to a matter of personal choice. I found that dropping down from 31's to 29 (245/70r16) made my Disco easier to drive up some of my local hills. Your Disco may tackle the local roads OK as is - put a trailer on and try that too. You'll soon figure out if your TDi has sufficient power to drive the 33's around where you are.

If the 33's are muds i would just keep them as play tyres otherwise 245/70/16's will correct your speedo which should be about 5-8 % over ie 105 or so = 100kph.

    desicion has been made.
My local tyre dealer is going to look after me (been buying tyres from these guys for 30 years) Going to trade the Trial Cutters by tempra (yanki made tyre) MT's for a set of Micky Thompson AT's to achieve simular size to 31's. This does two things, gets the height back down a bit with a tyre that is closer to standard and also allows me to take out the 4 inch spring lift and replace with 2 inch lift springs to turn this disco back into a vehicle more suited to my needs, work bus and tourer. Hopefully this will also help achieve the best fuel economy.
    cheers
