Brake Rotors
Hi Guys,
I'm a relatively new landrover owner and have virtually no mechanical knowledge. I have an '02 freelander with 64,000 on the clock which my dealer (formerly an authorised landrover dealership) tells me needs replacement front brake rotors because they can't be machined.
With no mechanical skill I'm paranoid about being taken for a ride so I'm wondering whether this is normal after so short a time and why they can't be machined since to my knowledge they never have been?
Any comments appreciated, cost to replace rotors and pads is around $700. Anyone know of an alternative, reputable place in Adelaide I'm all ears.
Cheers

Genuine Rotors should retail at about $118 each (SDB101070)
Genuine pads should retail at about $156 for a set (SFP000020)
If you want to PM me your VIN I can confirm those part numbers for your vehicle.
It looks to be a pretty simple job to replace them both, why not do it yourself. It could save you $300 or thereabouts.
Triumph Rover Spares have a good reputation (we use them for second hand parts), 8384 6933.
Failing that, I will be passing through Adelaide in about 6 weeks if you want a hand.

my understanding is that when a rotor gets too thin, warped or grooved they can not be machined if it's too thin it's dangerous.
The rotor will have a minimum safe thickness set by LR. If it's only a couple of mm above this it's hardly worth it.
The life span depends more or less on your right foot!

If you are getting x4 rotors and x4 sets of pads including labour, it's not a bad price. If you want a comparison check out Disk Brakes Australia, (DBA) parts they are reliable and not over priced. Not sure if they do a freelander though?
Any supercheap auto will tell you.
