Alto Artarmon - broken RHF window repair solutions?

    Hi there,

I hope i'm posting in the right spot for this one?

Hoping someone can help me with a problem. I put my car in for a “health check” yesterday at Alto Landrover in Artarmon. When I went to pick the car up, the drivers side window was down, on a slant and obviously off the rails - broken. I didn’t notice this until I’d pulled out of the driveway so quickly reversed back in asking “WTF?!”. The reply was “yep, it’s broken…” geniuses. Obviously forgot to tell me that when I paid the inspection bill. Not happy Jan! Working fine when I brought it in and now it’s busted. They’ve given me a quote to fix it at $750! The fact that I’d travelled $40 in a cab after they called me to tell me it was fine is a real kicker, as obviously, I had to catch another cab home and leave it there!

I’m not planning to pay that, rather pursue my options as it was in their hands when it broke, but I’m sure I’ll either need to take to someone else for repair or try myself.

Has anyone else had any experience fixing this kind of problem?

Also, has anyone else had a similar experience with Alto Artarmon?

    Thanks all!

    David

Hi mate and welcome to the forum. Simply I learn't to stay away from the dealers. Try Davis Performance Landies or Graeme Cooper at St Peters. I go to Graeme Cooper's they are excellent. You will find a good independant Landie mechanic a freshing change from dealer service and dealer inflated prices. I also believe the level of workmanship at most of the dealers is poor, mainly the city dealers not the likes of our mate Big Jon out in the desert.

As for your dispute with them just try you best, they are well I am not allowed to swear here.

    Hi David,

I went to Alto at Artarmon once, and was not happy with the price and service.
I live about 5 minutes from their service centre, yet I choose to travel elsewhere, so that sort of sums up my feelings

Two colleagues also have had issues with Alto, one with a D2, once with a Defender.

I had a similar issue with faulty drivers side rear window, was repaired for around $120 at Davis Performance Landies in Annangrove.

Some people say that Davis are expensive and can over-do some things, I have been happy with their service and they are fairly upfront ... it's a bugger that they are out on whoop whoop though !

Check your PM inbox.. my experience isn't pretty..

I can say publicly that if you want a dealer, I've always had good service from Trivetts Parramatta.

Best of luck getting Altos to come to the party with the window,

    Regards
    Max P

I had similar problem with my D2 front drivers side window just before Christmas. It happened while in my hands and not at a dealer like yours.
Pulled it apart myself and repaired it myself. Two problems - 1) three spot welds on the regulator had come adrift and the channel at the bottom of the glass was rusted.
I braised the regulator but as the channel holding the glass is not available without the glass and I needed to fix it quickly, I bought a new glass complete with channel ($495 retail - I got it from dealer for $300 though). Rather fiddley to fit but possible.
I have still got the old glass with rusted channel and have worked out a way that I can repair it.
Drop me a PM if you want a phone number to have a chat about it.

Nice one, thanks a heap for all the info guys!

A great introduction to my first time on the forum.

I've spoken to the guys at Graeme Cooper and there fixing it for a very fair price. SHould have it back in time for beach camping at Hawks Nest this weekend!

I'm looking forward to picking my Rangey up from Alto tomorrrow morning and telling them i'm taking my business elsewhere.

similar thing happened to my D1 years ago when it went into our local Bob Jane - windows worked perfectly when it went in. Driving out of the workshop in the now rain and the passenger window would not go back up.

Being Thursday before Easter I pulled the door trim down to find the mech broken, so I chocked it up with a lump of wood for my holidays and fixed it with a new mech on my return - I complained to Bob Jane manager and he asked me how much was the fixed and wrote out a check for the full amount!!!

albeit a bit sad that they didn't tell you that it was broken, but also a bit hostile of you perhaps to accuse them of breaking it, and expecting it to be completely their fault [although you don't quite go that far - it's just an insuation i read into your post- perhaps i have misread it.]
it's a well known fact that window regulators do fail and the fail rate is directly attributed to the amount of use the window gets -winding it up and down, and another problem assisting this failure is the pressure put on the mechanism when the window goes up and the motor shuts off, i like to just take the strain off by clicking down just a tad to relive the pressure.
i also have had two of my windows fail in the same manner.
sometimes in a customer / workshop relationship the wires get crossed, as it seems happened in your case and maybe you were in that cab when it happened.
i cannot comment on the repair cost as i fixed my own without buying any parts and realise that not everyone is able to fix their own or have the time to.
suffice to say that your window failure was 'most likely' not their fault.
over many years of maintenance i have seen lots of cases like yours where the thing has failed whilst in the workshop, it's always the workshops fault with no owner realising that his 10 year old mk1 treddly may have just spat a rod as they do that.
now if the door was ripped off or dented and wasn't before, that would be a different story.

I have just fixed all of the window regulators on my Disco 1. All of them were in a poor state because of the crap design of the rollers; even the two functioning windows had cracked or broken rollers.

I tend to agree with Harry; don't be too harsh on the mechanic these flaming things can break at any time without warning.

The front ones cost me $180 each for new regulators, although I probably could have repaired the old ones. The back ones were fixed by making brass rollers and new rivets for nix
