    Snorkle

OK i have heard that if a snorkle is fitted properly you should be able to stall the engine by covering the top of the snorkle, well i tried this with my TD5 and it wouldn't stall, in fact no change at all in the idle of the engine.

Could it be that it isn't fitted properly or could it be the airbox isn't sealing as well as it should or is this a myth

If the installation is airtight, blocking off the intake will stop the engine. It might take a few seconds to use all of the stored air in the intake tract, but it will happen.

there are drain channels in the top air inlet to let the rain out these will let a fair bit of air in as well

What about those little Ducks Bum things in the bottom of the airbox? Do they have those on the TD5?
They are designed to let water out and nothing in...however....in the event of you blocking the main air inlet I would imagine that it's possible for air to be sucked up through these little drainage plugs.

    Just a thought...........

most snorkle heads have a flow path for heavy material (water and sand particals) to zip right on out of the back of the head under their own relative velocity. block the main inlet and thats going to allow air in. Take the head off of the snorkle and try again.

The ducks bum is present in the td5 and if functional should flex closed in such a manner that should you decrease the pressure above it (ie get on the noise with the snorkle head blocked) they will close even tighter.

Yep - they've definitely got them Streaky. Was under my disco doing an oil change today and noticed the duck's bum. Gave it a squeeze and a lot of sand / dust etc fell out all over my head. Inside the bottom of air cleaner box appeared clean, so hope it was just a build-up of crap in the rubber over time. Has probably never been cleaned since new.
    Cheers .........

Test it and make sure it does not leak....

if so then you have a disaster waiting...

when i drowned Camilla the Fender it was due to the snorkle leaking and it started to hydraulic. if it had not have had that air leak i would have driven out..
