Gee they look like some kind of rivet or could they be chain links, like from a timing chain, how wide are these beauties?
Never or less, I would cack myself If I found something like that in my sump.
Just pulled the sump off my 2.25 petrol engine and found these in the sump. What the hell are they ?

Are they anodised aluminium?

The engine was running fine when i bought it other than a miss from way to much fuel . Wondering if the timing chain had busted and replaced ?
maybe they used to also rivet the bigends on back then........
all i can come up with is either someone didnt chek the sump before refitting it.......
or he has kids.....which like to stick all sorts of things in all different holes.....
they are not any engine parts ive seen in an engine......they wont do any harm...
they will just sit in the bottom of the sump.......too big and heavy to get dragged into anything......
They most likley are the rivets for the mud shield. A bodge job. You chisel off the heads and remove the mud shield. then punch the rivets through hoping the all fall into the sump. Replace the crankshaft oil seal from the outside then tap the holes and put screws to hold mud shield.
G'day Groucho
Yeah! you could be right there, front timing case Oilseal rivets, but there should be 8 from memorythey were replaced by pan head metal thread tapping screws type B No 6 x1/4 inch
the civilian motors had rivets.
cheers
Beat me to it. Looks like the mud shield rivets, which would be done in order to replace the front oil seal without the need of removing the timing chain cover. Check if the mud shield is fixed with tapping screws as UncleHo described.
