D110 - Insulation Install

i was on the famous freeway yesterday.......and noticed that once i got my speed upto the limit....110kph ish.......
things started to really heat up.......there was that much heat soak under the seatbox that i couldnt rest
my leg against the handbrake lever.....
it was burning..........along with the transmission tunnel....floorpan......and seatboxes.....
with the revs below 2500rpm......this doesnt seem to be a problem as the heat is nowhere near as high.......


i was thinking of some sort of heatv shields for the transmission tunnel....but thats as far as i got......
so i thought i would mention this whilst youve got yours all pulled appart......
it may be easier to have a look at some options......i havent had a look under lurch to see if theres
enough room to make up and fit any heat shields.......

maybe its just lurch that gets this hot.....other fenders may not have this problem....?

yes....lurch has been chipped.......may make a difference.....

I am going to paint the floors with Hippo liner paint and the firewall will get a couple of layers of the same insulation that I used on the roof.

I will keep updating this post as and when I complete a section :D

I know your work - been reading all the Defender insulations posts for a couple of months now!!! Was the inspiration. How do you feel about the results in your car?

I know what you mean about too many projects, but this all needs to be done before we go touring in June.

Hello LRH,

Am very happy with the results. Not only is the noise reduced, but the heat is reduced to the point that I can't feel any difference when I put my hand on the transmission tunnel, from when the car is cold, to freeway speeds. It made our trip to Cape York from Melbourne an enjoyable adventure. I too would like to remove the air conditioning to finish off the sound insulation of the firewall. Ideally I would like to re locate the air conditioner behind the cargo barrier, to free up the passenger foot well. Again an other project that I don't have time for.

very neat job there! timely, as i just spent tonight putting back in the last roof panel in my project, after re-doing the roof lining with a thin carpet and putting some insulation sandwiched between the liner and roof (although not as neat as yours)... Putting it in I found somewhat trickier to do nicely, but that might have been due to the extra thickness I'd added to the panels with the carpet. New plugs would have helped too (resorted to an appropriately sized self-tapping screw, which worked a treat. Too well in fact, which is why there's a few buckles in the roof panel now) - So be careful with the re-install...

What I've found, now that our soundproofing project is nearing an end (using formshield as well) is that the sound is deeper, not just quieter. That makes it much less irritating...

Another trick I resorted to was to stuff all those plastic panels that surround the window with an appropriate insulation material... Without it, they're essentially just big hollow plastic drums!

All you need to do is undo the grab handles / sun visors / rear view mirror / light fittings and then using side cutters pull the plastic plugs out one by one.

I haven't called these guys yet, but they're the only place I've seen so far that advertise a heat and soundproofing material that's designed for the engine side of the bulkhead. It's the best place to start to keep out the heat and noise, and you need to use the right stuff that is oil and fuel proof.

If anyone's managed to put something on the engine side of the bulkhead (or is about to!) I'll be keen to see how you managed. It looks almost impossible with all the awkward shapes and different bits 'n pieces there. I totally agree that's the biggest problem in terms of noise once you've sorted out the easy stuff....

Well, I'm waiting until I do a V8 conversion sometime this year so I guess that's cheating a bit! :D

It's got to be worth it, though. Our Mitsubishi Canter at work has the engine right under the front seats and not much insulation but it's still quieter at speed than most Landies.

Land Rover made sound proofing and insulation for the Defender and even added some comfort .. it's called a Discovery!
