    dash problem... continued

    Hi Guys...

Today my dash instruments & lights (minus the indicator indicators) finally gave up... all until the last 5 k's then they lit up and went off lit up and went off and did this about a thousand times before coming back on until i got home. (discoII TD5)

Anyway it gave me chance to check a few things.

    • Cruise control still worked
    • k's were still counted on odometer / tripmeter
    • no switches being pressed made a difference
    • no beating anywhere around the dash made a difference either
    • the lights come on as tho the ignition has just been turned on

so my question is ... where the hell do i start looking? is there a computer that feeds the dash instruments? as its still counting k's i would assume there is somewhere. could a dodgy connection be the trouble here and surely i cant be the ONLY person ever to suffer this?

anyway off to stick my nose in rave now....

    Thanks in advance

    Steve

    Hi Steve
OK best place to look is the SLABs and Body ECUs.
They live behind the glovebox.Power suplies from both fuse boxes need checking too.
The dash recieves heaps of info from the slabs(speed abs TC to start with)
    Cruise is a seperate ECU.
There is suppost to be a cardboard style kick panel below your glovebox hiding all the wiring,is yours still in place????
If its not there is a fair chance wiring could be upset by big passengers big feet.
Look at the Land Rover Owner International magazine - lro.com forum,I spent hours there the otherday reading 3 amigoes posts.

I had the same problem recently. Check you rear right tail light, if it's not operating then replace bulb or fuse for it.
aparently LR in their wisdom wire the dash lights to the tail light circuitry. The one of on off could be a bulb filament broken, go over a bump it connects etc etc

here is the post of my no dash lights Help Not Dash lights

    thanks guys will check.

im assuming if i am unplugging any ecu i need to be disconnecting the battery?

im guessing dodgy earth isnt the issue as the indicator lights are still working, they seem to share a common earth...

if a bulb is perhaps loose that could cause the intermittency also i guess? although would it effect the guages as they die also...

thanks again... feel free to throw more suggestions in the pot!

ok i have isolated the problem to the instrument cluster. i have it out and if i tap it when i have the ignition on it dies. tap it again and it will come back.

anyone any good at instrument pcb diagnostics? maybe a dry joint...

    thanks

    Contact Bundalene via Ebay
Got lots of D2 stuff,as he wrecks landys,he may have a dash.Top bloke to deal with, bought a few things off him.
The Body ECU SHOULD display your correct kms,as far as I know.Unsure wether you need testbook to sort it after the swap.

Steve get some wd 40 and remove any plugs or sockets and spray gently over them, push them back on and work the contacts ..ie up down on off so that the wd 40 works on all the plugs , sockets sufaces. then do the tap test again. If problem still eveident then u may have a dry joint somewhere that needs looking at under a magnifying glass.
I am happy to look and resolder for you if u bring it over too meif that is what is required.

i'll give that a shot brad... would contact cleaner do the job too? i have to get some to clean the MAF sensor anyway (another problem) im a bit dubious about dousing with wd40 also as the pcb is covered in surface mount components and ic's wouldnt surprise me if it is that tho.. but i have plugged and unplugged today a fair few times while playing with it.. so still suspect a dry joint.. just cant see why it would knock the whole lot out unless there is a control ic on there....

if i need the help i'll let you know..

    Thanks
