Thread: Coolant OAT or Green stuff

It has always been my understanding that OAT coolant should be used all the time.

There is a great deal of difference between the two.

Its available - so why not just use it - just in case - or are you trying to save a few bob.

In all the handbooks, the sticker on the header tank on mine, all tell me to use OAT.

I wouldn't risk it.

Use OAT, Only use OAT.. (well ok you can use Caterpillers ELC and hitachis equivilent as its the same poo in a differnt shovel)


I use the nulon stuff that comes in a post mix 5l bottle and dilute it with distilled water.

if the system has had other stuff in it then get a proper system flush and clean done and then switch over to oat, find the nufti that put the wrong coolant in, and kick him in the ganglies.

The users manual says OAT for a reason. and its not becuase its a pretty colour .

I was told that OAT is the only stuff to use...every LR specialist and dealer has said the same thing to me when I had my Disco TD5..

As stated earlier..it's clearly marked on the header tank and in the user manual..

Previous owner of my Disco used the wrong coolant and I had to replace the Radiator 3 months later..

I agree with you the manufacturer specifies a type of product for a reason.
The cost to me is incidental compared to the damage that would be done by using the wrong product.
Availability out here IS a big problem, especially when you have to top up.
I was getting top up quantities sent to me from the LR specialist 4 hrs away because when I mention OAT around here they go blank and think I am talking about a type of fuel.
I have since found out that I could have topped up with water but my supplier didn't tell me that. Wonder why ?

Caltex ELC is the genuine Land Rover OAT coolant.
Been posted on here more times than I can count.

If you have a Caltex dealer/depot somewhere within a few hours drive, they should have it in stock/can get it.
Comes in 1l, 4l, 20l and 44 gallon drums.

ok from the cat manual for the busmaster

CAT ELC comes premixed in the correct concentration but under emergancy conditions can be diluted with 10% by volume of distilled water and should be replaced at the earliest opportunity

the nulon oat that I use specified that its ment to work at 33-50% concentrations. so if you filled the td5 at 50% you could dilute it with (rough guess) 3l of distilled water if needed.

When I bought my disco it had green stuff in it. The top hose had also begun to leak so when the hoses were done I flushed it out and put the OAT in. 2 days later the the radiator commenced leaking. Apparently the leak is typical for the model and I replaced the radiator with a reco item.
The supplier freaked about the OAT and claimed that it killed more radiators than it protected and that the green stuff would never harm the motor or other parts of the system.
