    Water in fuel warning light

On the way home yesterday arvo going over the Alfords Point bridge, the Disco stopped then restarted on the move at 80kph and the water in fuel light and hazards lights and engine management warning light came on, so i pulled over.

I thought i would just reset the car and then check the fuel filter when i got home, oh no i won't, just 500mtr down the road after resetting and getting on my way it happened again, so i found a spot to pull over again, just past the Alfords Point exit under the overpass out of the heat, to check the fuel filter, nothing in the way of water in the fuel, but apon restarting the car, nothing, she wouldn't start, and the hazard lights were still flashing too, no amount of resetting worked

We phoned our roving mechanic to see if he could help and in the meantime i thought i'd try a few things, pressed the inersia switch hoping it maybe that, nothing, tried resetting again, nope, tried draining the fuel filter again and resetting, nope, nothing, so i figured i'd get comfortable and wait for Peter to arrive, lucky i didn't, he phoned us at home 3 hrs later.

It turned out to be the fuel filter sensor (i hope) not being on far enough, tried the draining the fuel filter again but also tried pushing the sensor a bit harder and it seemed to go on a bit further

Got back in the car turned the ignition on the hazard lights went off (first good sign), let it prime the system and bingo, she fired up first gowhat a bloody relief.

I am going to have it checked to see if it was the sensor and not something that fixed itself.

Anyone else with a D2 had this happen

    Baz.

No...and I would still be looking for the problem.

The fuel sensor screws in and I have driven my D2 with it disconnected until I bought a new sensor. Made no difference to the car at all.

    Sorry Baz...keep looking

I am going to have it looked at, funny thing is, once i pushed the plug onto the sensor and turned on the ignition the hazards stopped flashing.

I've had the same warning light come on due to a dodgy sensor .. but it shouldn't stop you dead in your tracks. Could the ECU regard it as a critical fault and send it into shutdown mode until the fault is cleared or sensor is replaced?

When it first happened, the car stalled then restarted, sort like a big miss in the engine but the hazards came on, when i pulled over the engine was still running, i cleared it by shutting the engine off, opening the drivers door, pulling the key out, then putting it back in shutting the door and restarting the car, this cleared the hazards and i was off again, the second time it wouldn't clear and the hazards were still on even when the engine was off, until the plug was pushed on more, it then cleared (no hazards) as soon as i turned the ignition on.

The last of the D2's had the water sensor removed (one of the 750 changes) - perhaps because of issues such as Baz had where a dodgy connector appears to have been the cause.

Well seems it wasn't the fuel sensor, turns out that the inersia switch has been the culprate, it's happened a few more times and this time nothing worked to restart the car until i pressed the inersia switch to reset the car.

Yesterday arvo i took out the dual battery and tray to access the switch and low and behold it seemed loose, also the mechanism seemed to be loose as well, i removed the rubber cap, moved the switch mechanism and it seemed not to be OK, it didn't seem as firm as the last time i looked at it after hitting a very large trench at speed setting it off (broke the chassis)

Anyway if replaced the rubber put it all back together, reset it all and hopefully all will be OK, i'm going to buy a new switch just to be sure and in the meantime if it happens again i'll bypass it until the new one arrives.

What concerns me is that Rover put a light on the dash to tell you there is water in the fuel..... is it that common???

    inertia switch

The inertia switch is designed to cut off fuel in the event of a crash, but has been known to activate going over a large bump or coming hard out of a bulldust hole.
It is mounted on the firewall on the left hand side looking from the front. It is black, cylindrical and about 3 inches long with a rubber press-button on the top.
The button is pressed to reset.
