    Dirty MAF sensor

    Hey All

After reading a couple of threads about dirty MAF sensors, I decided to give mine a clean up with some contact cleaner. I blew out all the dead insect bits caught in the meshing and cleaned up the contact with the cleaner.

What I did notice was that there was quite a bit of mud splashed around the the inside of the sensor (thanks to a enthusiastic bog hole crossing at Toolangi), that there was some oil residue and that there were some very small metal shavings. There was also some oil residue in the pipe back to the turbo.

Now I know where the mud came from, but where has the oil and more importantly, where did the metal shavings come from? Should I be checking my turbo?

    Cheers

    Angus

Yes and i'd be checking how well your airbox isn't sealing, too have mud that far up the intake.

The thing is if the shavings are from the turbo it would seem they are going against the direction of the air, which seems strange too me.

    He has a snorkel.
Probably the person who fitted it left the shavings from the drilled holes and maybe started it with no filter..

The oil comes from the turbo modulator, when the wastgate is closed a small amount of boost pressure is delivered thru the small pipe near the AFM.
Oil residue is normal, oil vapour condenses when it cools and leaves a film. Its the reason the intercooler needs cleaning internaly from time to time.
