Just wondering what you guys use and recommend for the D1 300Tdi, I've always used GMH coolant, as on a test on leading coolants it came up best with a Wynns product, but that was over 10 yrs ago now, but recently when I drained mine I noticed it just aint doing it's job as water did come out of the block with a brown colour to it. I meticulously replace coolant every 12mths. I'm really after an effective corrosion inhibitor.

From memory i think the green glycol based stuff is OK on the tdi but on the TD5 OAT is required. Someone will correct this if it is wrong.
With the green glycol stuff you will always get a bit of brown sludge when you drain it. I have noticed this with many cars. Usually I do every 12 months. With the OAT I have not noticed this sludge but then it is supposed to have a 5 year life as well.
I do not believe the OAT stuff will hurt a tdi either.

I use nulon in mine,the problems happen when use mix them.If it has been run on GMH coolant,use GMH coolant. Pat

my Tdi came with OAT when I bought it at three years old (it was one of the last ones, 11/98 build) although it may have been changed by NT Public Works....Originally Posted by CraigE

If anyone has replaced their water pump, what was it like behind the pump. Mine was badly pitted probably from cavitation, I suppose you are always going to get some there because of the impeller but coolants are designed to reduce this too aren't they?

I replaced the pistol seal in mine a while back and it was all good.One thing,I got the rad rodded and it was 50% blocked even though it has always run coolant,that is comon so I was told(my girl is 10) but no corrosion. Pat
Just normal basic Ethylene Glycol coolant that is to GMH spec will do, I use the Wynns one as it is pretty cheap in 20ltr drums.
You have to mix 50/50 though with normal to soft water, hard water will cause pitting of the water pump.
A lot of the pitting of water pumps and fittings can be caused by electro static charge in the water which is there isnt much coolant or the coolant is too old in the system.
The pricey stuff (OAT) is a bit of over kill for most 300tdi's but if you are in a very hot and dry enviroment or you have very hard water then I would recomend it in those cases but normally you wouldnt waste the extra $.
