auto or manual?
manual,
if he cant move the stick possabley the interlocks have stuck in place and arent letting it come back if your lucky
if the stick is sloppy and it wont come out then the selector might have sheared it pin and is just sliding on the rod
failing that the teeth on the engagement collar have spured into the teeth on the inside of the gear and are holding it in place... judicious abuse might get it freed up but it might also snap things....
auto.
selector cable out of whack or cable has come undone and its not moving out of the 1 position
goop in the selector valving holding them in place and preventing gear shift
stuck actuator.
If auto providing the cabling is sound and moves correctly an oil change and use of a very thin detergent rich oil might free up the box.
