Thread: Oily Coolant

    Red face Oily Coolant

    Just wondering if some-one can help me out. Having brought my very first TD5 land-rover late last year, (2001) model. My first trip out saw my return on the back of a tow truck thanks to the hose clamp on my coolant line for the fuel cooler being on the wrong side of the barb. I dropped all my coolant and before i knew it i had one blown head gasket. After a strip down and new head and gasket. My Fuel pump then failed due to the vehicle sitting, after fitting the new pump. My turbo/intercooler hoses then failed and starved the engine of air. I now have the engine running ok, But continue to get oil into my coolant bottle. Im not burning oil nor is my oil level in the sump increaseing.

    Im wondering if the oil maybe coming from the oil cooler, Is it fitted with one. The other thing i need is a boost of faith as this car has cost me nearly $5000 dollars already and im wondering if there is light at the end of the tunnel.

    Any help would be great,

    yep oil cooler has more than likely let go or you pumped a shedload of oil into the cooling system and the guy who did the rebuild didnt flush the cooling system properly.


    Once you get this one sorted the next one is the fuel pressure regulator or the oil in the harness thing and then you should be right.

    both those ones are cheap to fix.

    Unless it is residue, you are looking at minimum aoil cooler failure (if it has an oil cooler) or a head gasket. I would give the cooling system a power flush to remove any residue and see how it goes. If you get oil back you have a drama. You dont say if its a Disco or a Fender.

    They do have an oil cooler,its bolted on the rh side of the block as you look at it,just above the sump.
    When they go they dump oil into the coolant or vice versa.
    As you arent making or losing fluids chances are the oil got there as a result of the last episode.
