On my truck it is a little plastic blob, not sure what it is for. No need to worry. But given Land Rover's tendency for surprise changes on the production line...
Now that I've upgraded from a 200Tdi to a 300Tdi, I apologise, but I will be asking plenty of silly questions about them.
I haven't even picked it up yet but when I was checking the oil level, the 300Tdi dipstick had a "ball" on the end of it. Was this ball a lump of sludge or just the way the stick is?

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.
No just a weight to keep the stick sitting the right way up. I'd forgotten it was like that until your post.

isn't the blob just to keep the scale on the stick off the tube so it doesnt stuff your read?
Also it stops the oil from rushing off the stick over nite to allow you to read it
its there to fall of and get mashed up by the crank and cause premature bearing failure.......
