    A bit of advise please

I've been having an ongoing problem trying to diagnose whats wrong with my engine for about 3 months now, the problem is all 8 plugs get sooted up within a week of driving, I mean completely sooted up, as in no area which is poking into the cylinder is not sooted up, I do mainly freeway work of 60km one way so its not like I'm going short distances.

In the workshop manual it says this is a symptom of faulty injectors, is it possible for all 8 to fail at the same time ? I have my doubts about this so I've been messing around with everything else to try and get it not running so rich.

I've replaced the plugs, leads, ignition coil, dizzy cap and rotor, checked the timing, replaced the ign advance unit, stepper motor, air filter, fuel filter, readjusted the MAF to the correct voltage (it was at 3.1v now just about 1v) But none of this has had any effect.

My fuel consumption is fine, I'm getting 14L / 100 km, on the freeway which is brilliant but the plugs are still sooted up like its running rich. My oil level does go down a bit but I think its more to do with the oil leaks rather than burning it, I usually put about a liter of oil in every 5000km to top up between services. The engines done 180,000km.

The engine feels like its down on power but having said that I don't know what it should feel like.... from rest to 2nd gear is good, third is gutless, fourth is better but only after 2500rpm, and 5th is also gutless but I can understand 5th being like that as its just a cruising gear.

When I rev the engine on my driveway after about 2500rpm black soot comes out of the exhaust, now I don't know if this means its excess petrol or I'm burning oil.

sounds like shes a little low on compression and is burning oil...

all 8 injectors failing at once would be pretty rare but not impossable.

If you know someone or are willing to pay for it have a compression test done and check that they are the right plugs, you might find that they are running too cool and fouling.

If the pump is common to all the injectors pressure may be down giving you a lousy spray pattern and poor combustion fouling the plugs and down on power.
Black smoke is generally fuel, with a blue tinge for oil.
If it has happened suddenly i doubt engine wear but?

I can only think of one other thing which will foul all 8 plugs and that is it is running rich. The only real way to check is to get an O2 meter and stick it in the exhaust and see what it is reading, it should be reading 0% - or at least below 1%

thats a thought but with it still being good in 4th after 2500 RPM I sort of discounted the pump as if it wasnt flowing properly youd get more power loss the higher up the rpms range you went.

Does it think it's cold? I'd check the temp sender to ECU and check the cooling system out.
Maybe AFM - is idle stable?

Sound to me like rich running.

    Possible causes:

Air Flow Meter - very likely

    Temp Sender Unit - possible

    ECU failure - unlikely

My money's on the AFM too.
See if you can borrow another one to see if it improves.

If you are getting 14l per 100Kms on the freeway and using 1 litre of oil per 5000K, to me it seems there is nothing wrong with your engine.

You don't start her up cold and move her into the driveway before you check the plugs do you?
If you have no misses or poor starting and the fuel economy is good, stop worrying.
The plugs are always sooted on one side on any V8. A bit of idling or a cold start will probably spread it. Why not try driving at 100Kmh on the freeway, then turn off immediately and check the plugs.

A long shot, have you checked and cleaned the PCV system, esp. the "T" pice pipe fittings and hoses I have seen these completely blocked and the Gauze filter on top of the rocker cover, drivers side, I'm assuming you have cleaned the "Hot Wire" in the AFM with carb cleaner, when you sort the problem can you post the solution up here, Regards Frank.
