G'day folks,
on the way home i stopped in to the local exhaust shop and had my middle muffler removed from my TD5 Disco, am happy with the result. Got home and popped the bonnet to have a look at my next project, the EGR Valve.
As i was moving pipes and following where they go i moved one of the pipes , running from the coolant expansion tank to the heat exchanger connected to the EGR valve, and it shatteredspraying my newly changed coolant into my eyes and all over the engine
.
This has now become a good time to remove the EGR completely as the disco is stationary untill i repair the blown pipe.
What i need to know from those more experienced that me with this type of EGR set-up is,
What do i do with the coolant pipes connected to the heat exchanger once i've removed the EGR valve and blanked the exhaust?
There are two pipes, one from the expansion tank to the heat exchanger and one from the heat exchanger to the block(i think).
Do i leave them connected as they were before and just let the coolant circulate through the heat exchanger, or can i remove both pipes from the heat exchanger and simply join them, thus bypassing the exchanger?
Thanks for any advice,
Phill

Yep, can still see, seeing red that is
Yeah, i read that thread, thanks Pedro, any idea on the purpose of the heat exchanger in question? Why would we want the coolant to be heated up via the exhaust gases in the first place?? That would go against the idea of coolant being coolwould'nt it?
Also, there is a serious amount of crud in my inlet manifold, would'nt be surprised if my Disco is suffering from emphasima(spelling????)...........
I'm not familiar with td5's but the coolant temp is probably what controls the egr valve opening/ closing ?

I found the same problem when I removed the ERG valve. I went all the way and removed the manifold to clean it all out. Its not that hard and adds about 1.5 hours to the job.
As for the spelling....I know, but Ron will be along shortly![]()
You'll have to leave the cooling system as it is (or was). Then you pull off all parts of the EGR system, fit a blanking plate and straight tube where the valve has been previously. Look here.

I have a .pdf-file with the instructions somewhere, I can mail it to you if you wish (provided I can find it).
