If the 3.9 has been overheated, and is a chronic overheater, then there is a very good chance that it has slipped sleeves.
The only way to be sure would be to pressure test the block, and the Poms are experienced at this but I do not know who does it in OZ..

It would be demoralising (for me anyway) to spend all the time building up a motor and installing it to find it is cactus.

The safe way is to rebuild the 3.5 which is a known quantity or maybe have the 3.9 resleeved.

It will not be cheap either way as with that miles, the cam, rockers, etc will need changing, and the pistons will have worn ring lands. The crank may need a grind. If the 3.9 is low miles and crank/pistons are good it may be cheaper to have it resleeved than new bits for the 3.5.

By the way, its usually just the headgasket leaking into the valley that causes the pressurising of the crankcase so a quick ugly fix may be just to replace the head gaskets, but at that mileage the rest is pretty tired.
    Regards Philip A.

That did cross my mind, to fix it up. Can't be much wrong with it. From what I've been told, it's a common fault with the breather blocking, then presurises the block as a result spits out a gasket.. But it's just lacking power, especially with the 33's. Need more power ! ! !
    4.11:1 Cwp's 3.5 will cope

    Thanks guys,
It's only a weekender car really, so I don't want to be spending big money on it.
What if I put the injection system on the 3.5 ? Are there much power gains ?
What cheap mods can you do to the 3.5 to get it to go... head porting, different cam grinds ect.. ?
I can do the all labour myself, apart from machining.

Where would be the cheapest place to get the parts from, may have to get some prices together.

    Cheers,

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but I'm in the same boat too.

A mate has an 87 3.5 EFI that he wants to convert to carbies, because he keeps burning out sensors. 3 burnouts later, at $700 a pop and he's ready to dump the EFI. I'm half keen to "help him out" and do a little trade.

Whats the diference between standard heads and EFI heads. Will they and/or the EFI setup make any real difference to a 3.5?

Any major increase in HP (such as a 4.6 conversion) will mean replacing the LT95 and is more money than I've got.

    Exactly

But back to an earlier question, is it worth putting on the EFI gear, considering it may not cost me anything?

So, more cleaning, replacing plugs and leads more often...... that sort of thing?
