The CAN bus is only used on the D2 for communication with the auto gbox. The CAN bus is disabled in the TD5 ecu on manual D2s.

I've noticed that the Nanocom unit has provision for 20 software unlock codes but only uses 2 (IIRC) at the moment - maybe some forward planning for extra modules? It would be good to eventually be able to use it on a D3, even if some extra licence fee was required.

Edit: And if they're smart developers then they will be using the ELM327 OBDII chip to support all OBDII protocols including CAN, so its only the software development that needs doing.

    Nanocom in Aus

Hi guys, I might be able to help out here as I just (2 weeks ago) purchased my Nanocom via Karcraft in Sydney for approx. AU$650.00. It seems Karcraft is to be the Aus/NZ agent for the Bearmach/Aylmer product.

The Nanocom is specific to td5 (D2/ Defender) vehicles and can read/clear the main engine ECU, the ABS/ETC ECU and the Alarm ECU including programing fobs and setting the alarm up - which I hope to do in the next few days.
It is supposed to both read & write the mapping on flash programmable engine ECU's but I haven,t tried this.(yet)
Also it can operate in instrument mode where it reads RPM, battery voltage, coolant temp, and tubo boost(although this is actualy calculated) in real time.
The Nanocom may be used with or without a PC (running XP) which is handy if your on a trip, however the PC interface makes it much easier to use .
For more info visit NANOCOM TD5 diagnostic tool where you can download the PC software along with user manuals in .pfd format.
The other sites mentioned on the forum eg blackbox are for the Rovacom product which I was considering until they changed their marketing to a single user/vehicle or a very expensive multi-vehicle license.
I would have liked to play with it a bit more but have just sold our home and had to vacate due to short settlement.

    Regards Chris

I've installed the PC software and a dummy device in the nominated com port to have a look at the software.
The inputs to the D2's SLABS ecu can be displayed, whch includes current engine torque. It will be interesting to see what is shown for remapped TD5 ecus. Not that I'm eager to get mine, but....

BTW, I know this may seem a little pi__y coming from me in particular but I will point it out anyway...

Upgraded maps are I.P and are protected as such by law...

All maps supplied by known companies are 'tagged' with identifiers allowing a company to track where they were installed etc...

So dont be tempted to 'move on' your mapping...

Also, the mapping process, whilst relatively easy, is NOT without its issues (see an old thread featuring yours truly) and can result in an immobile vehicle if something goes wrong...

However, should someone with a Nanocom want a map for their vehicle, maps can be written for you in NCom format and emailed for your installation...

    Thanks!

That's good to know. I was wondering if that might be an option for your upgrades.

    Think I was slightly had

After seeing the price that some of the guys are getting these units via a group purchase I think I've been slightly had - but still happy nonetheless.
I origionally enquired dirrect to Bearmach back in Oct 07 to which they return emailed that Karcraft was to be the Aus/NZ agent. When I contacted Karcraft they advised they would be approx AU$780.00 so when I was notified of there arrival and that the priced had been lowered to less than AU$650.00 I was over the moon - until I read the other thread that is. Now i'm a bit dirty on Bearmach for not doing a more direct deal as I was thinking of organizing a group buy also- oh well you live and learn. As for the product itself I'm very happy with it as it seems to fit the needs of Landy owners that do most of their own maintenance etc. as well as diagnostics if away from home base.
If Tombie reads this I'd be happy to consider the re-map upgrade file mentioned - just email me approx price/terms to christrip3@optusnet.com.au
    Thanks Chris
