    Smile ECUs & Gas Injection

    Hi All

Just posted my intro, so I guess this one is number 2! I am in awe of the knowledge base contributing to this forum and hope to learn a few things. But a couple of questions to start.

I am the proud owner of an 88 RR 3.5 EFI with LPG installed about 3 yrs and 30,000 km ago. Generally pretty happy with it although have noticed my fuel economy (on gas) getting progressively worse over the years (avg 21L / 100km in 04-05 to currently about 24L!). I also reckon that the performance on LPG has also decreased slightly, despite spiral wound leads (Bosch) and Iridium plugs.

I am interested in the benefits of direct gas injection, which I understand piggybacks onto the ECU. However, when I have previously investigated ‘chipping’ I’ve been told that my ECU was not compatible, for reasons I’ve never really understood. But if correct, my assumption is that that means a gas injection system won’t work either? Can anyone shed any light as to whether this is right and why it is so in my 88 RR?

Is the only alternative then to get an aftermarket EMS (Haltech, Wolf etc) first and would the total benefit of a fully flexible EMS and gas injection be worth the cost? On cost, my I suspect my MAF is buggered as it runs really bad on petrol and I 've had a few backfires from under the bonnet over time so the cost of a new MAF could be offset (at least that is the line I would use with the Minister for Finance...)

    Cheers

    Dave

AFAIK lpg injection piggybacks your ECU but also has its own ecu ? The lucas factory ecu isnt chippable but can be piggybacked (PhilipA has a unichip in his rangie) but i would go with an aftermarket ecu for fuel only- not aware of any ecu's that will do both.

Dave, where are you located? it's much easier to point people in the right direction re suppliers if we know where you are. I suggest updating your profile (see the User CP to the op right of the menu bar).

I might be able to suggest an installer who knows LR but he's in Sydney.

I had an older Haltech system on my 4.6 classic. The Haltech used a MAP sensor not the MAF so backfires weren't a problem - not that they occurred that often.

It's odd that there are a number of people on this forum complaining of worse fuel economy of late. I'm one of them.

One has to ask if there's been a change in the LPG mix recently.

My P38A uses a separate ECU for LPG and the original for petrol.

Thanks for the responses. I am in Canberra (have updated the User CP I think...) but Sydney is only down the road after all.

I had thought that a Haltech with the MAP, not MAF and dual ignition and fuel maps would solve the problem - the expense being the downside. And with the added cost of direct injection would the benefits be worth it?

    Not sure what AFAIK means?

AFAIK = as far as i know.

Dual ignition maps would be ideal for dual fuel but then the extra cost the gas injection i believe would be uneconomical on an old rangie - although i would probably do it myself if $$ permit.
