The convertor is bolted to the flex plate, but only sits on the splines of the transmission input shaft (not actually retained by anything).
Hi all,
I have just pulled out the motor on my Rangie and had some questions about the torque converter, the manual I have is next to useless and I have always had a manual so I know nothing about auto's.
The torque converter was bolted to the (what assume is) flex plate which in turn is bolted to the flywheel. According to the workshop manual it shows the torque converter mounted to the auto tranny input shaft inside the bellhousing. If you have pulled yours apart, how was yours mounted?
Also, I assume that auto tranny oil is meant to be pumped through the input shaft of the tranny into the torque converter???

Ok, thanks Jon. That was how mine was but not what it showed in the workshop manual.
Do you know of the oil from the auto is meant to be pumped into the torque converter?
Upon reassembly I have heard that the torque converter must be installed into the transmission and then bolted to the flex plate through the opening created when the starter motor is removed. If you do it the other way around, the pump gets damaged then the box fails, the world will explode and everyone will die.
Most of that is corect tho u should be able to bolt the torque converter to the flex plate with the inspection plate removed ....
As for the torque converter its the main oil pump for the auto it has vanes inside which pump the oil with the motion of the engin thus making the wheels turn and i were u and the box was a ZF id find the deepest hole i could for it![]()
