TD 5 No guts no glory

I have put air into the actuator and it moves, I have taken the modulator off and from being able to blow air through every orafice, after activating it on the 12v terminals the moderator does not allow air through, I have concluded that the unit is faulty and will see what happens tomorrow when I try to drive to work.
I pressume that air pressure allowed through the moderater activates the waste gate and so there is no turbo pressure resulting in reduced power out put. Hope I have got it right and a new part will solve this problem.

I had exactly the same and it turned out to be a fuel pump that was just about to die. New fuel pump in and back to normal.

My money is on the fuel pump with this one, let us know what it is, when you get it sorted.

I think you're right re the modulator being faulty.

The default operation (without the ecu supplying an earth path for the modulator) only the ports for the turbo outlet and the wastegate actuator should be open. This provides the default wastegate opening pressure. When the modulator is progressively operated by the ecu, some turbo inlet vacuum is applied to prevent the full boost pressure from getting to the actuator thus providing controlled over-boost. Yet you have all 3 ports open without ecu intervention which will allow excessive over-boost and thus the ecu will cut fuel to limit the boost.

Hi Graeme, my money is still on the fuel pump be interesting to see which it is.

You may well be correct and that's one of the reasons I'm getting a Nanocom - to check fault codes.

I carry a length of hose to bypass the modulator and a pressure gauge to test fuel pressure and a spare pump too. But the 3 ports open doesn't sound right to me at all.

did you fill up with fuel at the ampol just outside of albury.......?

Could be a faulty modulator valve.This is located under the turbo inlet pipe.
It`s a small black valve with 3 small hoses into it.
If it is faulty it will detect an overboost situation and cut back fuel.
If working properly it opens at about 1.3 atm (with voltage applied).
If in doubt replace. About $60.

Drove to work today and had a bit of drivind around to do during the day.
The car was fine and everthing seemed normal until about mid afternoon and it dropped power. Its not as bad as Saturday but it is definitely not happy under load. I have ordered a new modulator and will have it tommorrow. I should know by thursday night if it has worked.
I will keep you informed , thank you to everyone for your ideas, they all help to form a picture.
On the fuel issue, I did think thats what it was at first but this other seems to make more sense at the moment.

I know that overboost at least sometimes leaves a code. That was how my faulty modulator was confirmed.
