Mine have always been Bilstein .. replaced original items with Bilsteins and not replaced since (1 in 1989 and on another in 2003). Seem to work well.
Hey Folks,
We discovered at the weekend that the steering dampner in my 1990 Rangie has died, so I've priced the most likely items and the choice is;
Koni - ? - most expensive
Bilstein - gas
Boge - oil - least expensive
What are peoples thoughts on which is most suited to the car. I have muddies fitted and do use the car offroad.
I have Koni's all round, but could get 3 of the Boges for the price of the Koni. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers Guy

Mine is a Bilstein but have never had anything else to compare it to.
Still has a hell of a lot of resistance in it and it looks like this.
I'd like to have a drive of a return to centre damper sometime. To see what the difference is like.
4 Way Suspension RTC is a good bet for $160.00 Ive got one on the D2 and its great
You really notice the difference to a non coil over steering damper chalk and cheese basically
I bent mine ( along with the track rod ) and got both replaced.
forgot to specify Which damper I wanted so they put on a Pedders -
it's rubbish. The outer sheath thing rattles and bangs.
I have a RTC but the Old Man Emu type are good and only cost $120

Stick with the Koni, you get what you pay for.
You get what you paid for is often touted by persons willing to pay exorbitant amounts of money for products which have equivalents far cheaper
Bilstein will do a great job... And *most* people like the RTC units too...
I hate Rancho, but their steering damper is one of the firmest I've used and excellent with large tyres.
ToughDog are about to bring out an ADJUSTABLE steering damper.
I think the Old Man Emu unit is also good value
