    What towbar bolts?

    Hello folks,

I bought Numpty's Genuine LR Defender towbar (off his 06 TD5 Fender) and need the bolts to attach it.

I know I need high tensile bolts - I think they are 10mm diameter. Some dumb questions though...

    1) the 4 threaded holes in the middle of the chassis cross member - I take it I don't need a nut on the back of these? I guess it would be impossible to get one in there anyway.

    2) the 2 holes either side of the middle section going up into the cross member - they have a nut welded on the top so I take it I just need a bolt to thread into these?

    3) What length bolts should I get - does anyone have the exact specs so I can just go in and get some?

    4) How tight should I do them all up? Really crank 'em on with a socket set?

Thanks - I'm the first to admit I'm pretty clueless.

    PM sent.

RAVE might have torque settings for the standard UK spec. towbar - but I just did them up until they seemed tight enough but not crazy-silly tight.

You seem to have got your answer, so to avoid another thread on a similar subject. Im waiting for a recovery point to come in from the States which will use those 4 holes. It didn't mention any mounting hardware comes with it, so what size bolts are they? 10mm?

If so, 4 10mm HT bolts held only by captive nuts with a 5 tonne recovery point, is that suited to heavy snatch jobs?

Here are the towbar bolt specs:

Rear face of rear chassis cross member -
    4 x M10 bolts 35 long, 1 x spring washer each
These go into threaded holes so just test to see that they are in fact metric.

Underside of rear chassis cross member -
    2 x M10 bolts 30 long, 1 x spring washer each.
Again, these holes are already threaded.

The info above came from Solmanic - Numpty said the bolts are 10mm. I'm going to get some today so if they are not I'll let you know.

Always specify the thread pitch. 10mm fasteners commonly come in 1.0, 1.25, and 1.5 pitch, and less commonly in 0.75 pitch. People have got into the bad habit of using, in this case, M10 and no mention of pitch. Now M10 is commonly used to describe a 10mm diameter fastener of 1.5 pitch which is ISO Coarse. Never assume that a metric fastener is of ISO Coarse pitch. Some metric diameters have no less than five pitches in more or less common use. This applies to inch sized fasteners also. Never just say 5/8" NF or 1/4" Whitworth, always specify the pitch, 5/8" x 18tpi NF or 1/4" x 20tpi BSW. Tool storemen and shop assistants are not usually fitters or engineers, don't give them room to think.

Thanks Brian - so do you know what pitch bolts we need? Jeez - even getting bolts isn't easy!

Like I said - just try them in the threaded holes at the shop. I would recommend going to the nuts & bolts shop off Evans Rd at Salisbury.

Maybe RAVE has the bolt specs.
