Advance or Retard?

Once I figure out how to take a picture I will. I might take a movie of the engine running while using a timing light, showing how the mark is wrong. The plug leads are all in their correct places. I was using the light from number one lead.

Well BigJon according to these people these engines are still purring along OK, for a timing mark to move as far as described the rubber ring securing the outer balance ring to the the rest of the dampner must be broken or missing altogether, your a mechanic you tell me how it stays on and does it's job of externally balancing the crank. Maybe Arron can tell us how far this car drove after they noticed the balancer ring moving around, these rubber rings are Vulcanised to both surfaces so if it has moved as far as stated the rubber ring must have come apart from it's respective surfaces. I have seen plenty of balancers come apart and cause lots of damage, I have seen would be's if they could be's use a 3 Leg Puller and pull the outer ring off, BUT I have never seen an outer ring that has broken its vulcanised rubber ring stay put and just slide around the centre part.
I have on several occasions over the years had customers say their timing mark has moved, but on each occasion it was a spark plug lead in the wrong hole in the dissy cap or the timing light connected to the wrong plug lead, as I did myself the other week, not liars, just I haven't seen it, Regards Frank.

I would think if the rubber is extruded slightly outside of the mating faces it could make a lip on either side of the pulley that would stop the two pieces from falling apart, but still allow the outer section to rotate slightly on the inner section. I can certainly imagine that happening with a Holden 6 balancer.

How is that for a theory :p?

a little tip for everyone.......on just about all bent engines.......
the cylinder closest to the front of the engine is the No1 cylinder......
one of the heads will be further forward than the others.......

Not bad, more than likely so, But the only dampers I have seen do this are in 2 pieces usually with one bit embedded in the radiator, Regards Frank.

i think it was a commodore v6 the last one i saw........it had gone towards the engine and was rubbing on the lip of the sump........

and the owner didnt want it changed..........!!!
