retard - but the engine may run slightly hotter.
Ok, i've got a holden red with a blue motor electronic ignition installed.
Now under heavy load it's pinging a bit. Do I ned to advance or retard the timing advance?? (I can't remember)

retard - but the engine may run slightly hotter.
Retard it till the pinging stops, if it doesn't stop then you have other problems, Regards Frank.
What these fellas said.![]()
mmm, hotter wouldn't be very good at all, but I think it is more advanced than it should be anyway. Better crack out the timing light and the books tonight
Thanks all![]()

Don't be too concerned about the timing light, just knock it back until it doesn't ping. You will probably benefit from running decent fuel too.
Yes, that's a hazzard of bing poor and having some 1200 km plus to drive before the end of march in my series 3. About 400 of which is towing a camper trailer, 100 of which is uphill (almost). hence the desire for less pinging
I might just do some trials driving to work later this week .

According to a Google search I just did, a 202 red for a HJ has a Compression ratio of 9.4:1.
You would almost certainly need 98 octane to run that CR without pinging.
OR You will need so much retard that it will overheat.
Use 98 octane. Simple.
You only have to use it when you are going to have heavy loads like uphill towing .

Mmm, maybe the safest route is to refill when SWMBO isn't watching!

some say that the higher octane fuel will give better economy due to it being more efficient.......
in english.....it gives more kms per litre than the standard uleaded does.....
so in the long run......it works out the same dollar wise......
im yet to notice any difference in my old car.......
but when i run it through the handbrakes falcon.......which is EFI......
it does run better.....you can actually feel the difference as the computer will advance the timing......
so it runs better.......
i have also heard that running half and half.....ulp and pulp.....in your tank
increases the octane rating beyond the pulp 98ron......
i didnt believe it either.......
