My 1998 300tdi manual does same thing ie smokes an aweful lot of black smoke on take offs and extended acceleration - much more than I've seen in other discos or 4wds.... It's got new injectors, glow plugs and new head etc. It does seem to chew up a lot of diesel - I don't get near the economy that others claim. There seems nothing wrong with the hoses - some were replaced recently. It also sounds a bit tractorish if you know what I mean. What do you reckon - fuel pump needs tweaking?? (Murray Kingman did rebuild c 2 mths ago).

thanks to all who have replied I think im not the only one with this problem but I dont seem to notice it much on other tdi discos
maybe because I cant keep my head out of the rear view mirror looking for my smoke hope the injector cleaner works and replacement of one of my turbo hoses does the trick.
Tried injector cleaner wasn't RL2(couldn't get it) but was Redlines 85 Plus—Diesel Fuel Enhancer which made no noticeable difference. Backed the diaphram on the injector pump a little, which seems to help but smoke still appears intermittently on acceleration but a seems to be "greyer" not as dark as previous. I think the intermittent problem is still there but seems to be masked by backing the pump off.
Anyone for any other ideas.

Just a guess here, could the intercooler be full of oil and it "bubbles" up into the intake in blibs and blobs and hence the engine, causing the smoke?
Cheers,
Fraser
No I don't think so, cleaned the intercooler recently when I replaced the intercooler hoses thinking that was contributing (Intercooler was clean). I'm tending to think more and more the injector pump. By the way if the wastegate had an issue what would be the symptons?? (Line from injector pump-wastegate good)

Had the same problem for last twelve months, changed hoses new injectors no diff.Engine needed complete o/haul after that still blew heaps of black smoke.Last resort a injector pump o/haul at Rankins Diesel after that NO MORE BLACK SMOKE he said pump had been deteriorating over last 12 mths.Showed me parts effected in pump and this not uncommon with this model bosch pump.
i must admit my tdi is a bit of a bond car eg smoke screen on start up and take off, can be controlled with the noise pedal light acceleration seems to reduce the amount of smoke.
but i have decided that my intercooler must be a secondary sump for the donktook the hoses off the other day after reading another thread re crankcase breathers, my question is how and what should i use to clean the intercooler eg water and a solvent???
Have you got a boost gauge?
Seeing what the boost does when the smoke appears would give some big clues as to the cause.
