I've only ever used the 1/2" drive end of a breaker bar or extension bar, too.

Tank - the socket I needed was male. The plug is female.

Now I need a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter to fit my torque wrench
All sockets are female, I wouldn't bother with a torque wrench to retighten, if the thread is a bit sloppy (well used) you may strip the case. Use a ratchet length bar or move your hand halfway down the breaker bar and tighten with care, you can always check them the next day and nip up if necessary, Regards Frank.

Tank - Ill stick with the tourque wrench as the threads should still be pretty good (2002 110) This is the first service ive done on a car, so i cant exactly let experience guide me.

procrastination inc - filler/drain plugs require certain amounts of torque

    Not if it's a 12 point socket.

Have done many times. It's how I undo the filler plugs on my swivels.
