    D2 Busted wheel studs!

    Hi Everybody,
Well, I just got back from a long anticipated trip up to rainbow beach for some sand driving. Did the kings Bore track and when I checked the truck out after we exited onto the beach I noticed two wheel studs had broken clean off!!

We limped along the beach south back to Tewantin figuring this was the most gentle of beach exits & got the ferry back across the Noosa river.

The barge operator recommended a mechanic in Noosaville so after we aired up we gently made our way to have the broken studs replaced.

Unfortunately this wasn't to be so. no studs could be sourced locally and the last resort was Land Rover in Maroochydore who promptly refused to sell individual wheel studs and stung me $510 for a complete brand new hub!!!
    ($712 fitted)

Anyhow, when we picked the disco up this morning, the mechanic informed me how lucky we were as while they removed the remaining 3 wheelnuts another one sheared off !

I was wondering if anyone else had come across similar problems. I have never heard of wheel studs breaking off like this before. I'd be very interested in your comments fellas

    Cheers
    Andrew

    Captain Rattle Gun strikes again.
Wouldn't happen to a RRC with 16MM studs!

I've seen trailer studs break off after running loose.

I wonder if crud between the mating face and the hubs on assembly was the root cause of them coming loose in the first place.

Refused to sell you studs? They can't sell what they can't purchase.
Land Rover don't supply the studs individually, that is why they couldn't sell them to you.

I did a front stud on my Disco last year, RangeRov in Vic got me a new hub for under $300. I know that won't make you feel any better. It's annoying and I wish they'd never changed the stud size etc.

I didn't know that. Perhaps they could have explained their position a little better. You have to admit, for the sake of busted studs $500 for a new hub is a tad overkill.

We keep any old hubs that have been replaced so we have a stock of studs to hand. Having said that, I think we have replaced one stud in the last 3.5 years.

I kept the old hub, will try to get hold of some studs and reassemble it as a spare.

BigJon, does that mean that you're a good source for people that are looking for studs so that they can fit D2 wheels onto their trailers?
