Start with the basics test the leads with an ohms meter check the pulgs and dizzy cap and rotor as it could be anything has the engin got hot at all reacently is it using water ????
Question 1
3.9l V8 injected engine 1994 Classic RR
Symptoms:
When cold - runs VERY rough, revs drop at idle down to 400 ish indicated, then corrects and revs itself a bit higher.
When warm (say 15 mins plus) it seems to sort itself out and after a while it goes back to running like a dream !
I therefore have a strong suspicion that the temperature is relevant.
HELP !!!
Question 2: (This is hard without a pic) there is a cable/wire that seems to run underneath the distributor, and joins on to some other pipe or other. Sorry for the vague description. Anyway it seems that it may be broken / or at least the coating over wires broken ? Could this be some sort of sensor connection that might relate to above problem ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Could be ANYTHING ???
Hmm, Engine seems to be running as normal aside from symptoms described.
Wouldn't have the first clue how to test leads but I do have a small multimeter so feel free to tell me (you can safely assume I dont know how to use a multimeter too but there's no time like the present to learn !)

Mine did the same thig but since I cleaned the Idle Air Control valve on the back of the motor it has come good. I cleaned it with carby cleaner and in the housing as well.
It used to either idle really low or at about 1000-1500ish RPM until the motor warmed up.
It seemed to do it in steps too. Not just up and down anywhere.
Look just a wild guess.
The wires you are talking about. Do they go to a square plug on the RH front of the manifold.
If so this is the ECU temperature sensor.
If there is no signal The ECU would think the engine is warm, so have a lean mixture. It would be lucky to start but may and if so, would have the exact symptoms you are talking about.
The sensor has a high resistance when cold and low when hot. If it were open circuit the ECU would be in "limp Home" which gives a richer mixture than normal but not a cold start mixture.

Philip that was my thoughts exactly (of course I didnt know the name of the bits). I will have a look at it when the minister for war and finance gets home.
