    Front Protection

Looking at installing extra protection for the front of the Flandie.
Question is: ABS (plastic) "protection bar" or Stainless Steel tube type

Any pros and cons for either?

Both genuine Land Rover accessories and both require about the same work to instal.

    Cheers.

I have a genuine black tube bar - you need to remove the front plastic bar and apron - the spots for the holes are marked on the inside of the plastic.

Neither offers much in the way of protection other than light bumps but they do make a good bracket for the spotties - cannot be used for towing or recovery.

As far as the plastic A bar or the tube type - is just a matter of choice. The genuine pod driving/fog lights are designed for the A bar and do not fit with the pipe bar.

    Thanks Garry,

I am getting a set of bumper fog lights, so that's not an issue.
But can driving lights be fitted to the plastic bar? Seems to me they cannot whereas the tube bar has driving light provisions... or am I mistaken?

Where are you mounting the bumper fog lamps? Not the easiest to do without the pods or a bar.

I am not sure lights can be mounted to the plastic bar - I assume not as that is what the pod lights are for - they are made to fit in with the plastic bar.

The tube bar has standard tabs for lights.

    G'day Garry,

Not POD fog lights but the ones that are recessed into the bumper - low down. See the pic - it has fog lights installed... no need for the A-bar.

That is the first accessory I am getting, followed by roof rails (which I don;t have) and then A-bar or "Protection Bar"... kinda steering towards the A-bar to mount driving lights... and it might be a bit easier to tie a tarp or clothes line while camping ;-)

BTW, the A-bar on the Flandie above is available from US... pricy!

Only to be wiped out first time out in loose rockie terrain - the plastic in that area of my car is heavily scratched from boulder hits

Good luck getting the bits you need - ebay often has them.

I don't think SWMBO will let me go into rocky terrain... not in the Flandie anyway (the SII is for that)...

I am getting the fog lights from Graeme Cooper, and the other bits either from All Four x 4 or TR Spares... depending what I'll go decide.

So all of this will be for show Kool

I must admit my Hippo was going to have a nice bash plate added, rock sliders, some chipping and improved breathing and 2" lift and maybe later some re-engineering to make it dual range - but now I have a more offroad capable truck to spend all my money on - which it is doing rapidly.

So other than somewhat bigger BFG A/Ts the car will now basically stay standard - it is reasonably capable as long as it doesn't have to go up steep slow hills.

    Good luck with it.

YEAH!!!! 1000% BILNG!!! DOOF DOOF AND THE LOT DUDE!!!!

    Not.

I need to compromise. SWMBO will not even consider a Disco, but she does want to go 'bush', but nothing extreme or anything like Cape York. The 3 of us (SWMBO, 3yo and me) will not exactly be happy in the SII (besides, it's still in storage)... well, not yet.

So I need to make it as good and as capable without going overboard. A little extra protection here and there, better lights, bit more storage (roof racks for the tent), comms - that sort of thing... and yes, Ironman 2inch lift is on the books as long as I can convince SWMBO that the current springs a bit tired and need replacing
In the bog-standard form my Flandie had no issues on Fraser but a little extra clearance would be nice as I'd like to go camping with my mob in Brissie so my little one to go on holidays with her Canetoad cousins on Moreton and Straddie.

I got Cooper AT's at the mo, but when they will need replacing it will be 16 inch rims and a little bigger rubber... not sure what but that's a long way away yet.

Thants what 6mm alloy plate is for :P albeit mine site nicely behind the plastic, but protects the steering cooler.

Roof storage, lift and tyres are all a freelander needs to be reasonable. I have the Ironman springs, and find them very firm, and dont have much remaining travel. They are the best lift if you intend on hitting things hard, or leaving the ground/landing hard. Otherwise, get the 2" bearmach spacer lift.

The other thing to do is remove the sump guard thing, rip off the plastic, and replace it with alloy plate. most people use 4mm, but i got 6mm cheap, and welded it in place. With a low engine, the armour is a saviour.

    cheers!

PS> if you want serious rubber, simex make ET's in 29", a JUST fit... Its my dream tyre for play rims, but not that i can afford it...
