Can somebody explain starter motor poleing, have trouble cranking over.Throught it was battery which is only 3 mths old but have been told the starter is poleing and i need a new starter motor. At the cost quoted i need to do some reserch.
I recently had a starting problem (after a few river crossings) .... When I checked it there was only one of the three screws holding the solenoid on ... and it was loose too
I got new screws, cleaned everything up and put it together again ... No probs since.
I've had a starting failure when the motor is hot. Starter does not even engage. Open bonnet, let motor cool 20mins, starts fine. Assume problem is with starter solenoid getting too hot, given that it is just below the exhaust manifold.

a polling starter motor is caused by collapsed/worn bearings.
It causes the rotor to break the field and stall as it tries to rotate within the stator.
Armiture "dragging" on pole shoes whithin the motor. Pole shoes hold the field coils in place in "carcass" of motor. Caused like Rick130 said , badly worn armiture bushes/bearings.
give us the symtoms ie what it does /sound like ,clicking etc etc and I am sure some one will help or have come accross the difficulty
Symptons are slow cranking as if battery is low, this has also happened after driving for 40klms when turned off and gone to restart in 5mins or so
